CHAPTER 35

Gunter Meyer called himself a private detective. He was based in Munich, Germany and worked out of a small office situated in one of the less fashionable areas of the city. He had no staff but didn’t work alone, as he often used outside contractors.

Because, although Gunter referred to himself as a private detective, a more accurate description might have been, industrial spy. Or sometimes even, a procurer of wanted items presently owned by someone else.

Basically, a thief and an infiltrator.

But Gunter was not an assassin. For that, and for various other jobs that required a more physical approach, he used outside help.

This was one of those other jobs.

Gunter had been tasked by his primary, a man he had never met but knew as, Jebe Zurgadai, to find out whether a certain someone had a certain antiquity in their possession.

The person in point was a man known to all as, Die Kettensage. Or in English, the Chainsaw.

And the Chainsaw was not the sort of man you crossed. Or at least, not the sort of man you got caught crossing.

The antiquity was described as a necklace or torc made from a series of silver Roman Denarias circa 33AD. It was rumored that the Chainsaw had the said necklace in his possession.

Gunter was not surprised. The Chainsaw was well, known for his huge collection of art and antiquities. The man was obsessed with them. Gunter knew for a fact that the gangster owned at least one lost Chagall and two Picassos. All gained illegally and displayed openly in his mansion.

The necklace of Roman coins, however, was allegedly kept in a strongroom that doubled as a display area for the Chainsaw’s most treasured items. Gunter had checked with various reliable sources and they had confirmed the Chainsaw did indeed own some sort of object crafted from Roman Denaria. Gunter was sure it could be little else than what Jebe was seeking.

Bearing this in mind, he hired a team he had used before. A crack selection of safe busters, cat burglars and strongarm men. Six all in all. Then he paid them an obscene amount of money, half up front, to steal the coin necklace. Cost was no object as Jebe had promised almost untold wealth to the person who provided him with the object.

Gunter had no idea why anyone would offer so much for what seemed like a minor treasure, but his was not to reason why, his was simply to obtain the goods and get paid.

And now the only surviving member of the team stood opposite him, bleeding badly from two gunshot wounds. One in his shoulder, the other in his right thigh.

‘The only reason I got away was because I was the getaway driver,’ said Jonny ‘the wheel’ Abel. ‘Charlie kept his cell on so I could hear how the operation was playing out. You know, so I could be ready when they exited. But they ran into trouble almost straight away. Some sort of electronic area sensor that wasn’t in the blueprints.
