Figure 7.3 Desensitizing Triggers

If the clients dissociate, I will keep them in their body with statements like Notice where in your body you are feeling it and any change, even the smallest.

If the clients intellectualize, I increase the speed of the BLS, as they cannot move that fast and think at the same time. Thinking and pontificating stop the process.

The therapist should go back to target triggers:

After long conversations

When client is lost or confused

When therapist feels that the LOU is 0 or close to 0.

It is during this desensitization process, where the therapist’s individual styles and skills are required, that the clients get stuck, loop, or abreact, or other nodes open up. The therapeutic interweave, as taught in the Level II training, is the therapist’s best tool to aid the clients during this desensitization or reprocessing phase. The therapist’s style, training, and experience, along with client-specific information, should be used to create the therapeutic interweaves—that is, reframes, metaphors, and choices—to assist the client’s situations at the appropriate times. They can be administered either between sets or during the set while the clients do the BLS.
