Chapter 26

16:52 NZDT (UTC+12:00) 7 January 2016, State Highway 2, Rimutaka Hill, Wellington, New Zealand.

Peadair Walker

Peadair checked his watch: it was approaching seventeen hundred. Bravo would be back in camps in soon, they had apparently been hard at it. Peadair approached Hal.

“I’m heading back to camp, how things going?” Peadair asked in a serious tone.

“Of the six serious injuries, I’m only really worried about one. The others will take a few weeks to months to heal. But one of them is still unconscious, he has serious head injuries, and a penetrating injury left-sided chest, we have the bleeding stopped and the lung sounds good. Someone gave him antibiotics. But I’m surprised he has lasted this long. If he were operated on I would expect him to live.”

“Does he have family or friends with him?” Peadair enquired.

Hal nodded, “A wife and three children. Two boys and a girl. The wife was one of the other serious injuries. The children came off relatively unscathed.”

“Bugger. Have you talked to her?” Peadair decided he would leave this sort of thing to Hal.

“Yeah.”

“He is not suffering?” Peadair asked.

“No.” Hal replied shaking his head.

“Keep providing care. He’s lasted this long, maybe that’s a good sign,” Peadair said.

Hal slowly nodded his head, a small smile on his face. Finally he shook his head, “Doubtful.” Peadair patted him on the back and then walked out the door.

Peadair then made his way back to camp, passing the Guard at the gate. The smell of cooking permeated the camp.

Ariel Blažević saw Peadair coming, and walked over to him with a bowl in hand. She handed it to him and said “How are you holding up Paddy?”

“I’m fine,” Peadair replied with a smile.

“Fucked up, insecure, neurotic and emotional?” Her question elicited a small grunt of a laugh from Peadair.

“No. Not good, not bad, not okay. Just fine. I’ll be good when we make it to the farm,” Peadair explained.

“Are you absolutely sure about that?” She pressed.

“No. But I hold out hope,” Peadair said smiling. “Things could get worse, so I’m looking on the bright side.”

“Always look on the bright side of life...” Ariel sang.

“I never knew you were a Monty Python fan?” Peadair smiled.

“Being a good Missouri Baptist daughter and wife of a devout Catholic, I would never admit that. Or that I’m agnostic. So don’t go around spreading your slanderous lies.” Ariel smiled.

“Don’t worry, your secret is safe with me. How is your clan?” Peadair asked.

“Big Tony is sulking about, but I’m trying to be easy on him. Little Tony, Flo, and their kids are okay. But they are pretty adaptable. I’m not so adaptable, I never liked moving to California when Big Tony transferred to NMCB-3, sure the weather was great, but by the time we moved Little Tony had joined the Magnificent Seven. Then Big Tony told me about your job offer, with the leave and pay that was what he was really worth. The only catch was moving to New Zealand. But Little Tony was doing well, he had just married Flo, so we decided to come.
