Chapter Thirty Six

My father had not stopped beaming with pride from the second he saw Tray, the giant, open his truck door and step out. I could almost feel my dad pat me hard on the back and say, “That’s my boy…” Of course, he would not do that until later because my mother was standing beside him. He definitely knew that she would never permit him to live down the proclamation. So, my dad would save his words about my conquest for later. However, my mother would be correct in her assessment of this particular situation. My dad was going to be nearly intolerable after seeing Tray for himself.

When Ember slid out of the truck window my mother gasped in wonder. She placed both of her hands over her mouth in surprise. We were all stunned into complete silence as we watched my beloved run across the field. She looked like a streak of sunshine in motion as she ran to greet the small child. Her spirit light was clearly overjoyed because it radiated from her body.

My beloved was wearing a silky blue and yellow Vaydem sacred vestment. It had strings of rubies and sapphires sewn around the torso. Her hair was tied up in two slick pony tails with thin braids wrapped around them. Her eyes were outlined in electric blue liner and the lines were shaped into a butterfly mask.

“She is positively stunning,” my mother stated breathlessly.

“You didn’t share with us that she has Vaydem lineage too, son…” my father added and turned his head sideways as if in deep thought.

“I didn’t know, father. I knew her male teacher was Vaydem, but no record exists in their registry for anyone named Pateman. Tray and Ember’s names do not appear in the archives either. I asked one of their High Elders to check both places for me. Melody performed that favor in exchange for instructions on how to channel an Avah’sheal illumination. I gave her permission to share those channeling instructions with all the elders because performance of that private record search was an intrusive request. I felt that was a just payment for such an invasion of their confidentiality,” I told my parents and they agreed.

“A Vaydem lineage might help explain some of their extraordinary spiritual gifts…” I wondered aloud and thought about the possibilities.

I would have continued to consider the idea further because it was highly intriguing, but then Ember knelt down in front of the little boy. I watched in fascination as he lifted his blue aura and my beloved channeled her spirit light around them. They looked like they were hugging each other inside the center of a beautiful, sunny sky. I had to shield my eyes until she finally released him from their embrace.

Tray has outdone himself this time. I shudder to think about the magnitude of the favor he will ask me for in return…

My father had seen the Vaydem race at the height of their zenith. He has a great deal of admiration and respect for their culture.
