Chapter 12

Marshals’ Bedroom Corridor, Omega Society HQ, Haven

It’s been eight days now since I became part of the Diamond pack, and I’m as conflicted as I was on the morning that Lucian and I kissed Joseph.

Roman excitedly wanted to hear all the details of that kiss.

Since then, he’s been circling around Joseph, draping himself over him and stealing his pens, whenever Joseph’s filling out his official forms.

He did the same this morning.

Roman chewed on the end of the pen.

“Do you have an oral fixation?” Joseph teased.

Roman blushed, before his gaze dropped to Joseph’s crotch. “It’s been said.”

Then it was Joseph’s turn to blush, before he snatched back his pen and then stroked his hand through Roman’s wild wave of hair like that could ever tame it.

Nothing can tame Roman.

I’d die if it ever did.

They haven’t kissed yet.

Roman knew both Lucian and me but with everything that he’s been through both with his old pack and then in the Institute, he doesn’t easily believe that he’s worthy of being loved.

And he’s adamant that he won’t be used.

Joseph will have to earn his trust.

I love watching the dance between the two of them, as they slowly lower their walls. They’re both the sort to need the emotional connection.

On the other hand, Joseph has fitted into a place between Lucian and me like he was always there.

Plus, the fact that he’s up at the crack of the dawn, cleaning the Haven HQ from top to bottom, until it gleams. I think he does it in service to us as a pack, and it means a lot to me.

Lucian caught on by the third day that it wasn’t an attempt to undermine, but rather to care for him.

Now every day, he gently strokes Joseph along the back of the neck, before dragging him into a kiss, which says thank you without him having to voice it.

Joseph always looks happily dazed for at least half an hour.

But then, Lucian cooks for us all, serving up the most delicious bacon, egg, or pancake breakfasts.

So with both of them, I’m a lucky Omega.

But Dante…?

Dante has been nothing but coldly professional. He ignores Roman’s displays of affection and treats Lucian with a haughty indifference.

He spends his shifts protecting Roman in silence.

The rest of the time, he hides in the old office that we gave Joseph and him as the marshals’ bedroom.

He’s polite but cool to me. Sometimes, it looks like he’s going to say something, as if he’s desperate to. But then, his lips thin, and he clenches his jaw.

He holds his voice inside.

Fuck, it hurts.

Why’s he avoiding us all?

Nervously, I hesitate in the shadowy corridor outside the office.

It’s evening, and the setting sun casts dying rays through the arched window at the far end of the corridor. It’s lightly snowing outside; fat snowflakes cling to the glass.

I need to talk to Dante.

My heart’s pounding, and my palms are sweaty.

I miss the comfort of his arms, and his deep, rumbling voice. Despite the distance that he’s keeping from us all, he’s still slipped his jacket around me every night for me to sleep with.
