Ruiha

As the evening drew on, Kemp and Ruiha were oblivious to the world outside. Each carried the weight of their recent hardships — Kemp, burdened by the shame and cowardice stemming from the recent attack, managed to forget; while Ruiha, fleeing the clutches of the Sand Dragons, escaped her life on the run – if only for a short time.

As they discussed their dreams and aspirations, Kemp and Ruiha found a genuine connection, marked by shared smiles and laughter. Their conversation flowed effortlessly, surprising them both with the ease of their bond. Ruiha, trusting Kemp, shared the secret of her illegal arrival in Lamos, yet she kept the shadows of her past in Sandarah safely concealed for now. Meanwhile, Kemp, fueled by youthful ambition, expressed his longing to rise to the esteemed position of a court mage serving an important noble of Fenmark.

The atmosphere abruptly shifted, and Ruiha’s once animated expression contorted briefly into a mask of alarm. With a rapid shift, she averted her gaze, a silent warning etched across her features. Leaning closer to Kemp, she spoke urgently, her words laced with a sense of impending danger.

“Apologies, Kemp,” she whispered, her tone urgent yet rushed. “I don’t mean to sound rude, but you need to be quiet. Do not draw attention to us, and, whatever you do, do not say my name.”

Kemp regarded the top of her head, now lowered to obscure her face, and nodded in understanding. She was glad to see that he had taken her words seriously, maintaining a vigilant silence, taking her warning to heart as he met her lowered gaze with a subtle nod of acknowledgment.

Noticing Kemp’s gaze trailing in the direction she had glanced moments before, Ruiha observed a hint of anxiety and caution in his tone as he leaned in to whisper, “there’s a big man coming over to us.”

Ruiha sighed in exasperation and responded in a hushed tone, “Did you see him with anyone else?” Her question hung in the air, a hint of concern in her expression.

Kemp’s eyes darted around the room, scanning for unfamiliar faces, and he replied, his voice tinged with growing fear, “No, but there are definitely four or five new faces that weren’t here earlier this evening. Is everything okay? Should I be worried?” His apprehension was palpable as he turned to Ruiha, seeking guidance.

Ruiha’s response was blunt, her tone grave. “Unfortunately, everything is not okay, and yes, you should probably be worried. Although they are here after me and not you, so they may simply leave you be.” Her words bore the weight of harsh truth, signaling a sudden and perilous shift in the situation.

The dimly lit room was buzzing with energy. The clinking of glasses and the hum of conversations and laughter echoed throughout the common room. The mood shifted abruptly when suddenly Ruiha stood, fork in hand, and spun, stabbing the fork into the large man’s neck. He screamed, his hand reaching for where the fork had pierced him. Ruiha pulled the fork out, and a spurt of blood followed.
