Chapter 26: The Recruit
âMister Devander? We know youâve been awake for some time.â
Pietro opened his eyes. The straps around his wrists and ankles meant he couldnât sit up, so he stared at the tent canvas above his head. âDoesnât seem a lot of point in being talkative, seeing as you tied me down,â he said.
Pasionâs face appeared leaning over him. Bald, with wisps of gray hair around the ears, the old man looked tired, but his water blue eyes were clear and focused. âA necessary precaution Iâm afraid. Weâre aware of your skills.â
âHow so?â Pietro asked.
âI was fortunate enough to read your file before we found you,â Pasion said. âWhen your employers decided to abandon you they wasted a talented resource.â
Pietro sighed. âI guessed you werenât just a kind-hearted soul,â he said.
âWise to draw that conclusion,â Pasion said. âIâd have saved your life anyway, but your abilities make the effort much more ⦠worthwhile.â
âWhat do you want?â
âYour experience may be the difference in altercations between my people and Waldenâs, in the short term, well ... there are many possibilities to consider.â
âYouâre making a lot of assumptions, weâre trained not to co-operate,â Pietro said.
Pasion smiled. âI wonât be asking you to give up Federation passwords or important secrets. They abandoned you so thereâs little you can offer in trade.â
Pietro wiggled his toes and flexed his hands. âThe restraints arenât convincing me.â
âNo, indeed,â Pasion said. He moved to the side and Pietro felt the pressure on his right ankle release. âWe are talking. I think I can trust you.â
With the straps loosened, Pietro slipped his hands through them and sat up. âThank you,â he said. He noticed an armed guard at the entrance of the tent. The manâs eyes were on him, his expression passive and professional.
âYouâre welcome,â Pasion said. âYou must be hungry. Soup? Not much Iâm afraid, but it may take the edge off.â
Pietro rubbed his wrists. âWhy is it so hot in here?â
âDown to the geography,â Pasion replied. âWith our current status, discreet locations are few and far between.â He turned his back and typed something on an antiquated keyboard. The accompanying monitor went dark and Pasion faced Pietro again and sat down. âNow, time for a proper discussion,â he said.
âWhereâs Gebrial?â
âSafe and well,â Pasion said. âYou both recovered fully from the virus, although we must treat you regularly for the next few days.â
âAnd what will that cost me?â Pietro asked.
Pasion smiled. âTo be honest, the delivery of the late Atticus Finch provided us with a great deal to think about.â
âWell, thatâs a relief,â Pietro said.
âCome now Agent Devander,â Pasion chided. âYou were warned off this case before they abandoned you. Your curiosity kept you pushing to find answers, defying your masterâs wishes. Donât you want to learn a little more of the mystery that brought you here?â
Pietro frowned. âDepends on what answers cost.â
âWhat about if they cost nothing?â
âYou wouldnât do that.â
Pasion laughed. âIâm happy to disappoint you then,â he slipped his hand into his pocket, pulling out a small vial.
