Chapter 12 Cassie

Lucy and I headed for our first class at the Magical Arts Tower. This tower looked very different from the enforcers tower. It stood at an odd angle – almost like the leaning Tower of Pisa. It was made out of golden sandstone and had glittering diamond pane windows.

A tall old man with a long white beard and pointy ears stood at the front of the class. He reminded me of the humans’ idea of a wizard. Not what I expected.

I took a seat next to Lucy since she was the only one who didn’t send glares my way.

“Welcome, class. I am Engelbart Nolan but you can call me Bert. Today we’re going to be going over the fundamentals of different magic systems. Including elves, fae, witches and shifters.”

“Shifters have magic?” a female elf at the front of the class scoffed.

I recognised her as the bitchy girl who’d egged on the elves yesterday when Lucy was terrorised.

Who is she? I asked Lucy in thought.

Oh, that’s Elora Elmese. She’s a niece of the Elven Queen. Best not to piss her off.

“All supernaturals have magic to some degree. Even shifters.”

“Shifters are nothing but filthy beasts.” A gorgeous male elf next to Elora sneered. “Why are we even talking about them? They don’t have magic.”

“Actually shifters are very powerful since they can take on two forms and wield magic,” another girl said. She had long red hair and black wings so I knew she had to be fae. She had a weird aura of power around her.

Who’s that? I asked Lucy.

Ivy Blue. She’s half fae, half witch. Spends a lot of time experimenting with different magics. Real social outcast. The elves are scared of her and everyone calls her Ghost Girl.

Why?

Because she’s like a ghost. We lived in the same group home together. She always seemed to disappear like a ghost. Lucy shook her head. She’s a little weird. Talks to her cat a lot rather than people.

Hey, I walked around with a baby dragon. Who was I to judge? A pit formed in my stomach at the thought of Murphy. I kind of missed the feel of his presence. Guess I got more attached to him than I expected.

Ivy’s name sounded familiar. I’d heard of her when I’d gone to Lucy’s group home after Liv disappeared. She’d been one of the people there who had refused to cooperate with me. All she had said was Lucy was trouble.

“Now with fae magic, all of their gifts come from the elements. Most fae can wield one or two elements. It’s rare for them to wield more than one but Silvana Goodwin, the fae queen, is one such fae,” Bert told us. “Elven magic is very similar. It comes from nature and the elements as well. We can wield more than one element and between elements. Does anyone know what a between element is?”

I thought this class would be easy since I’d learnt fae magic growing up. I had learnt about other magics from Mum.
