Lily's face was flushed when she entered the room, but I didn't immediately think to ask her why. My thoughts were consumed by the chance of Argus and the other valkyries finding out what I'd unintentionally done. If I didn't train him, I could hold onto my power for a little longer, but mine had already significantly weakened by the time it had begun to take root in the boy.
"Did something happen?" Lily asked, her gaze fixed on Argus' puffy red face.
"He cut his hand," I lied, "but I've mended it."
I wondered if Argus would dispute it, but my lie seemed to settle him a bit. "Where's Jaemin?"
"He took Valerie."
I lowered Argus to the ground and began to heal Faraj, my fingertips stinging where my skin touched his. "She's . . ." I noticed Argus was watching me closely. "She's back to normal?" I asked vaguely.
"She's in bad shape. I think we should have brought her here for treatment. We don't have much time."
We had five or six hours before sunset. It wasn't a lot of time, but it wasn't hopeless either. If there was anyone who could help Valerie recover enough to stop her Valkrum, it was Jaemin.
"Jaemin can handle it."
I could see the doubt on her face, but she didn't protest.
Before she could change her mind, I said, "It's a little dangerous in here. Do you think you could take Argus home?"
"Let me stay, Irina. I promise I won't get in the way."
I didn't have the energy to argue with him. All I managed was, "I'm sorry.â
Argus turned to Lily. "I know, sweetie. But I bet if you come back tomorrow, the valkyries will be feeling much better."
Argus reached out, hesitant, and took Lily's hand, leaving me alone with the rest of the wounded valkyries. I walked over to the window, hoping that the cold air would help me rally the nerve to continue my work. When I had first received my abilities, I hadnât been able to think of a more fulfilling gift than healing others, but it had come to feel like an eternity of pain. Was I wrong to want it to end? I'd put in my time. I'd served the valkyries well, but as much as I wanted to be rid of this burden, Iâd never expected it to fall to someone so young.
I turned back, and my breath caught as I saw Faraj sitting upright watching me. "You look terrible," he said, scratching his beard.
"He says from his deathbed."
He stood, his brow furrowing into a wince. "I'm serious."
"I'm just tired," I gestured to Thorn and Cielle.
He all but cut me off. "Where are Valerie and Jaemin?"
"They're recovering." I probably should have led with that.
Faraj cracked his neck and adjusted his shoulder before he walked over to me, his tawny shoulder-length hair matted with blood. "The boy wasn't cut. Why did you lie?"
"You were awake," I said, matter-of-factly. "Why else would he have cried?"
He shrugged, closing the gap between us. "Irina."
He took my hands in his, but I was frozen.
