“What the hell, Caden?” the guy on my left hisses. “Turn the lights back on. This isn’t funny.”

The ripping of Velcro sounds in the dark. “It wasn’t me, you idiot. Stop freaking out,” Caden says as a beam from his flashlight illuminates the small space. He clears the area, then turns to where I’m standing between his teammates. His gaze lands on me, full of loathing. “Don’t try to pull any shit like you did upstairs. I’ll sedate your ass before we throw you in the pit.”

“I wouldn’t be worried about me right now, Caden. You have bigger problems around the corner.”

Caden rolls his eyes and turns around, taking point to lead us out of the elevator corridor. We round the corner, the halo of light landing on Cleo, Lyza, and Zander. I should’ve known he’d be down here. He’s standing between Cleo and Lyza. Actually, he’s holding Cleo back from Lyza. Damn, Whatever Lyza did to Cleo, it must’ve been bad. My girl looks like she has something on her. I can’t tell what it is, but it’s encasing her whole body.

Wait a second. It’s water. Of course it’s water. Why would it be anything else?

Lyza lifts her arms; bolts of lightning arc around the hallway. They don’t seem to be aimed at anyone in particular, making the hall look like a plasma orb with Lyza at the center. But that won’t last long. This is about to hurt really fucking bad.

A buzz vibrates through the hallway at the same time as I’m hit with an electrical current. It seizes my whole body, tensing each of my muscles. My eyes clench shut and I grit my teeth against the pain. No matter how hard I try, I can’t pull more air into my lungs, they just won’t expand.

Finally, she lets go, releasing us from her grip. I suck a furious breath, my lungs burning. Did she hit Cleo with that blast too? Can she even pick and choose who she hits with it? I can only imagine the damage done to Cleo with the water surrounding her the way it was.

“Holy fuck,” the guy on my right says. “What the hell was that?”

“Fucking elementals,” Caden says. “They have more power than anyone deserves.”

Lyza and Cleo’s heads turn, gazes like daggers, cutting right to him. Zander looks over his shoulder, snarling as he sees me. Cleo moves to shove past him, but he steps into her, trying to block her.

I move to shake the guards off me but they tighten their grip. “Knock it off,” Ryan warns. “We told you not to start shit down here.”

“Oh shit, dude,” the guy on my right says, like he’s just had an epiphany. “I heard about this. One of the other guys was telling me about how this traitor not only left AGAS to fight for elementals, but started fucking one too. That’s his whore over there.”

My vision clouds with red. Fucking shit talker, calling my girl a fucking whore—I’m going to find out who the hell started that rumor and enjoy beating the hell out of them.
