“I’m just saying if Mr. Marshy had kept his tide to himself, the movie would have been done in three minutes,” Ember insisted as they exited the theater.

“But that’s the whole point!” Wade gushed. “The tide ebbs and flows. You can’t stop it!”

“Oh, I could have,” Ember retorted. “Like my dad says, nothing wat—” She stopped herself short. “Uh, I mean, nothing stops Fire.”

Ember hoped Wade hadn’t caught what she had been about to say. She didn’t want to hurt his feelings. It wasn’t a very nice expression to begin with.

Luckily, Wade hadn’t seemed to notice.

“Ooh, ooh! A photo booth!” Wade rushed forward to a photo booth stationed on the sidewalk. “Let’s take a picture!”

“Um, okay.” Ember hopped into the booth alongside Wade, careful not to let her fire get too close to him. This really was crazy, being out with a Water guy. Ember knew full well that their elements didn’t mix. They couldn’t even hold hands—her fire might evaporate him! Or he could extinguish her! But Wade didn’t seem to mind her warmth. In fact, he moved closer as they positioned their faces in the frame, his water inevitably bubbling a little. Ember noticed the coolness of his cheek.

“You…you smell nice,” Ember said.

“Really?” Wade gushed happily. “I’m wearing a new cologne! Acqua di Rio. The salesperson told me it would bring out my inner essence!”

“Inner essence?” Ember raised an eyebrow. “Is that a thing?”

“I don’t know.” Wade shrugged. “But if you think it smells nice, I’m buying a whole gallon!”

Ember’s cheeks glowed pink.

“Oh! The counter’s flashing down!” Wade warned her. “Here we go—smile!”

Several snapshots later, the machine printed out two strips of photos with all the funny faces they had made. Except Ember’s fire had completely blown out the exposure, and all that was visible were two sets of eyeballs.

“Sorry,” Ember said. “I guess the photo booth wasn’t made for Fire.”

“They’re perfect.” Wade admired the pictures weepily. “Our first photos!”

He handed Ember her own strip, and she gingerly grasped the edge so she wouldn’t burn the memento. It was a little cheesy, but then again, Ember had never taken a photo with anyone except her parents. So in a way, this really was a first for her.

Just then, a clock tower chimed the hour. Ember looked up at the lowering sun. “I should get back before my àshfá wonders where I am.”

“Want to meet again tomorrow?” Wade asked hopefully. “I know a café with the best bubble tea you’ve ever tasted.”

“I’ve never had bubble tea,” Ember admitted.

Wade grinned. “Then it’s a date!”
