Istare at the City’s wall and yell out in anger. “You are shitting me?”

“No, Master, ” says the Fire elemental in my hand. “They have hostages. ”

“Shit! Shit! Shit!” I curse loudly.

I’m not angry at her—I’m pissed at whoever is in charge of those Mages. The Fire elemental had wisely taken it on herself to first check out how the Mages were set up, before bringing up the lava, and that’s when she noticed that there were people tied up and in cages. Correction, there were non-humans tied up in cages—and there were a lot of them.

So much for my plan to burn everyone in the compound to a fucking crisp. I sigh and look down at the Fire elemental. “Sorry,” I tell her, “I am not upset at you.”

“I know, Master. ”

“Thanks for what you did, though. You saved many lives,” I tell her with a smile.

“You’re welcome, Master. Call us again if you need us! ”

“I will. Fire,” I say. My Fire elemental disappears.

I turn to the gang, who have been watching me have a one-way conversation and everyone is curious about my outburst, as I am not usually visibly angry. “We have an issue,” I tell them. “There are people there,”

“Well, yes. The Mages,” Leeha says, but I shake my head.

“As in non-human hostages,” I add.

“Shit,” Leeha says after staring at me for a couple of seconds.

“That changes things,” Bryan growls, slamming his fist into the tree next to him, causing a hail of the acorns to fall to the ground.

“Obviously, our plan of using lava is out,” I tell everyone.

Besides Leeha, Bridget and Bryan, there are a dozen others, from knights to Mages. Others are scattered all around the City and in the woods that surround it, but these are the folks Bryan trusts to be here with me. Most of them are scarred from battles long past

and older than me by decades, but they listen when I talk, which is a rather odd feeling.

When they look at me, there is respect, and even some awe, in their gaze.

“Can we rescue them?” one of the older veterans asks.

“Not sure how. I mean, the hostages are surrounded by all those Mages and soldiers,” I say.

“What about the tunnels?” Bridget pipes in.

“What tunnels?”

“Well, you had the lava being brought up to just below the compound. We can have the elementals send the flow back down and then use those lava tubes to get us underneath the compound.”

My fiery-haired elemental mistress bounces her eyebrows at me.

“They won’t even see us coming.”

I’m pretty sure my jaw bounces off the forest floor as I stare at Bridget in amazement. “My God! I never even thought of that. Oh, but wait. The heat would be too much,” I tell her, shaking my head thinking of what the tunnels would feel like after lava had flowed through them.

She snorts at that. “Alex. You have elementals to do
