I rolled over with the intention of snuggling Tessa, but found that she was already up and about. So instead of cuddling my mate, I ended up snuggling up to Griff, which was not the worst thing in the world.

The door to the room opened before I could wake up any further and Tessa came back in with a towel draped around her petite form. The urge to pull the towel from her body and pull her back to bed was stronger than I had anticipated.

It took everything I had to remain where I was.

“Morning, sleepyhead,” she said, sounding sassier than normal.

“Good morning yourself. You're awake early,” I grumbled.

She just smiled and almost laughed. “Apparently I slept really well last night. I wonder why?” She grinned and all but winked at me.

“Maybe it had something to do with the multiple orgasms we gave you?” I suggested.

Tessa barked a laugh at my bluntness. “Yeah, that probably has something to do with it.” She nudged Griff to wake him up.

Usually he wouldn't sleep through something like this. To say he was a light sleeper was an understatement. Maybe feeding on all that blood had knocked him out cold though? There was nothing like asleep after getting a full belly for the first time in a while.

He didn't stir and I was distracted watching Tessa dry herself off and get dressed. But when I nudged him again and he still didn't wake my gut twisted, telling me something was wrong. “Griff,” I called his name as I smacked his shoulder. “Come on, wake up.”

Tessa must have heard something in my voice because she turned and watched me. Her eyebrows furrowed on her delicate forehead. “Griff,” she called softly, never usually needing anything more than that to have him wake up.

I watched as her eyes went distant, as though she was looking at something in the room that I couldn't see. I had to imagine she was searching for anything wrong with the mate bond between them.

Confusion clouded her face as she came over to the bedside with softer wisps of fabric that covered her brushing gently against one another. That was the only sound in the room.

The only thing that could possibly be louder was our heartbeats.

The concern on her face had me shaking Griff’s shoulders slightly. “Come on Griff, wake up. This isn't funny.”

Still, he didn't move, didn't even flicker an eyelid. It was like he was dead to the world. I might have actually thought he was just dead if it wasn't for his chest rising and falling.

“Can you sense him?” I asked Tessa, trying to tamp down the worry in my own chest.

“Kind of,” she said, sounding confused as she brushed some of Griff’s blonde locks away from his eyes. “I can feel him there. But it's like there's something between us, something blocking me from really sensing him.”

“Can you tell if he's conscious or not? Get in his mind and see if he's aware of what's going on?” I asked, not sure how their mate bond worked.
