Dawn was graying past the overhanging trees. Another sleepless night. I sat up in the musty SUV and watched the sky get brighter and kept thinking to myself So that’s it. So that’s it.
Ariel had left my father an hour ago so he could try to sleep. He was probably staring up at the roof of his own car and rehashing his own thoughts as the night dispersed.
Before she’d bid him goodnight Ariel had thanked him for his story. For the trust. And then she’d told him, “Pete. My Pete. The world has humbled us. We feel diminished by our very lives. Nothing can make things as they were for us, between us. But our souls are connected. Our lives entwined. You know this. We have walked so many roads together. Yet this is the last. You know this too. We are joined upon this final road in common purpose. Journeys end in lovers meeting, right? And all I can say is that I’ll walk it with you to the end. Because of that connection. And because whatever may have happened to either of us along those joined or separate ways you are in my heart and I am your friend.”
Then she’d left him to resume her watch and as she passed my car she glanced my way and gave a little nod and I knew this night’s unburdening had also been for me.
I suppose it was a gift. Now I understood my father’s reticence and anger and my own toward him now seemed pointless and petty. But a consequence of that understanding was that I had gone to bed in a world in which I was righteously angry at my father’s resentment and then watched the sun rise on a world in which I really had been its cause. A world in which I had killed my mother.
