CHAPTER 19

JAMES

“Arough fight eh?” Pete asked as James was let into the holding cell with the remaining prisoners in his cell block.

“I made it back didn’t I?” James shot back, finding a corner he sat down, wanting to be alone with his thoughts for once.

Pete wasn’t having it though, he came on over and sat beside him.

“How many did you kill?” Pete asked, his bright purple eyes seeming to shine in the darkness of the room, whether a trick of the light or not, James noticed it.

“I killed a monster, couldn’t do much else, but one man died,” James said, his entire body burned from exhaustion and he didn’t know how much longer he’d be able to stay awake.

Pete must have noticed, because he sat up and put a hand on his arm. “Rest, friend, I’ll watch over you until they call me out for a fight. We get a day or two between fights, rest while you can.”

James didn’t trust Pete, though he couldn’t say why, but Slayers actions had put him on edge and he didn’t want to trust anyone, much less someone while he slept. But he had little choice. His body was shutting down, so he looked up to the dirty blonde haired man and peered into his eyes.

Something there comforted him, it was impossible to tell a man’s character by a look, but James was sure now that this was a good man, he didn’t know how, but it allowed him to slip off into a deep sleep moments later.

Time slipped away as he went into the blackness of his dreams. He dreamt of a black dragon consuming him with flames as black as night, all consuming and powerful. Just as it seemed like the darkness was going to be too much and overtake his very being, a green light pierced the darkness and he saw the face of an old friend. Why Phil was visiting him in his dreams, he did not know, but he felt at peace thinking of his friend and wondering where he’d gotten off to.

So much so that by the time he awoke all he could do was think about his friend and how he needed to escape and find him. Pete sat where he’d been the entire time like a marble statue, unmoving and stiff.

“How do we get out of here?” James asked, his voice hoarse. He cleared his throat and tried again, but Pete held up a hand to forestall him.

“You have to win,” Pete said. “Win enough and you’ll be set free, crimes paid for.”

“How close are you?” James asked, Pete grinned down at him.

“I’ve got a few more fights left in me, they won’t take me down so easily,” Pete said. “In fact I think I can make you stronger too, if you are open to it.”

Pete was whispering by this point and James leaned in to continue the conversation. “How?”

“You’ve strength enough to be ascended, and I just so happen to be someone in a position to do that for you,” Pete said, his smirk returning.
