Bitsy Morgan was in a big-time snit. “I’ve just come from the hospital and they wouldn’t let me see Frances! Can you imagine? Turning me away? After all the money I’ve raised for charity in this town?”

Molly steered Bitsy to the storage room and sat her in the tattered easy chair she’d found at a garage sale and had come to love. “Cool off, have some tea, and try to remember that she was badly burned last night and isn’t up to visitors. I’d say that might be why none of us can see her.”

Bitsy couldn’t help but give Molly an embarrassed smile. “You’re right of course. I’m just not used to being—”

“Is thwarted a good word?” Emma said as she poked her head in.

Bitsy roared. “Come here, you little brat. I want to turn you over my knee.”

Bitsy’s laughter did little to lighten Molly’s mood. Until it was made public, Molly knew she’d better button her lip and not tell her that Jason Lerner was the dead man in the fire. Randall would know it had come from her, and he’d have her head on the block. Her fear for Daria, however, wouldn’t let up, and she wondered how the hell she was going to put on a happy face and make it through the day.

While Emma and Bitsy teased each other, Molly filled the teakettle, then went about the shop turning on all the lamps and making a sign for the door that said the shop was closed for restocking. At least Max’s truck full of merchandise would keep her mind busy until she was able to talk to Daria. Randall didn’t need to know what she’d heard last night. After all, so what if Daria told Jason she could kill him? People say that all the time when they’re mad. She knew she’d probably said it herself at least a thousand times.

Molly returned to the storage room and fixed tea for Bitsy. “Is Sister Phil at home? I’ve got to call her and tell her I won’t need a Web site for the La Casa sale.”

“Oh, dear. I hadn’t thought about that.”

“I didn’t either until now. I’m still in a state of shock. Poor Frances.”

Bitsy rose and said, “I’d better call my customer and tell her to forget the Belleek. I doubt anything survived that fire. Oh, Lord! What a tragedy. God forgive me, but I’m glad the O’Briens didn’t live to see their treasure house destroyed. That alone would have killed them.”

“Well, the bright side is that Frances at least is alive. We can be thankful for that.”

“Of course. I didn’t mean to sound so mercenary.”

Molly smiled. “I know you didn’t mean it that way. It’s a loss on so many levels.” Oh, if only Bitsy knew how great a loss. Molly didn’t want to think about Jason Lerner. “I’ve got some calls to make too,” she said as she walked Bitsy out. “If I hear any more, I’ll let you know.”

Emma waved good-bye, then said
