Donovan’s closed at ten, and Bryce was surprised how much he’d enjoyed working. Of course, being in proximity to Mia probably had something to do with it.

He was full of energy, and Mia was exhausted. But she’d worked two jobs all week and was trying to get her business ready to open. She had no way of knowing that Bryce hadn’t worked at all, because he hadn’t shared that with her, yet.

They sat at one of the tables with her feet in his lap.

“You’re hired, New Yawk,” she murmured sleepily.

“What? As a busboy?” he laughed. But then it occurred to him that he could offer to help for the time being, since he didn’t have to get a job right away.

“No, to give foot rubs.”

He’d been massaging her feet for almost ten minutes.

He winced. “Well, you’ve got a nasty blister forming. I’ve got some salve that will take care of that.”

Mia frowned. “Salve? You have salve?”

He moved her feet and stood. “Sure. I’m a runner. Let me grab my bag out of the car.”

When he returned, he put the salve on and rooted around in the first aid kit someone had produced. “Voilà,” he announced when he was finished. “It won’t even be pink by morning.”

“You’re amazing, Murphy,” Mia squeezed his hand. “Hey, where are you staying this weekend?”

“The Sage Wicklow.” He’d booked it for two nights for starters.

“Oh, that works.” She smiled. “I can’t believe you came to surprise me.” Her beautiful eyes lit up. “What other surprises do you have in store?”

Bryce looked around. Finn, their parents, and a few others were still milling around. He rubbed his thumb over her knuckles and lowered his voice. “Well, I’d rather have that conversation in a little more private setting.”

She popped up, all signs of fatigue gone. “Let’s go to your hotel.”

“All right!” Bryce grinned.

Her face went beet red. “To the lobby!” she sputtered.

“I know.” He laughed and hugged her. “Gosh, you’re cute when you’re embarrassed.”

She pulled him toward the kitchen. “Come on. Let’s go.”

When they said good night, her family thanked Bryce profusely for pitching in.

They got to the hotel, got coffee from the counter in the lobby, and sat on “their” loveseat. She chattered on about her shelter and showed him the logo and marketing materials on her phone.

Bryce was impressed. “This is really good stuff, Mia.” He pulled a bottle of chewable vitamin C out of his pocket and popped a couple. “I’ve been kind of sneezy this week.”

“Oh, great. Did you give me your cold?”

“I don’t have a cold.”

She lifted an eyebrow.

“I don’t,” he repeated.

She pulled her hair from its knot and shook it out. It was beyond gorgeous in the fire light. “All this brand stuff cost a fortune, but I thought it was worth it. You only get one shot at making a first impression.”

Mia literally sparkled as she talked about her business. Bryce couldn’t believe that he would get to experience all of it with her, here in Boston, and was more convinced than ever that he’d made the right decision.
