Island Food & Cocktails

Jordan’s Restaurant in Bar Harbor is famously known by locals and tourists alike for their delicious wild Maine blueberry pancakes and blueberry muffins. But when the summer season comes to an end and the tourists have all departed for home, there is another special treat at Jordan’s available only during the holiday season that just us year-round residents of Bar Harbor know about. Kelton, the cook, always serves his delicious Eggnog Muffins and equally mouthwatering homemade Eggnog Milkshakes. It’s a holiday tradition Kelton started quite a few years ago when old man Taylor and his wife, Betty, were in the business of making their own homemade eggnog every Christmas season and selling it at a table just outside the Shop ‘n Save starting the day after Thanksgiving until right after the New Year. As a young boy, Kelton couldn’t get enough of their tasty creamy holiday beverage and so he incorporated eggnog into his muffins and shakes, and voilà, a new holiday tradition was born and boy, do the year-round residents of Bar Harbor just love it!

So on Saturday morning, the night after the Restaurant Association Dinner, Mona, Liddy, and I found ourselves standing in a long line outside Jordan’s waiting for an open booth. I hadn’t seen the place so busy in December since that unfortunate incident with old man Taylor and his wife some years back. There’s nothing like an unexpected scandal to bring out all the locals to a popular breakfast spot on a bitterly cold winter morning so they can rehash the infamous events of the prior evening.

I remember it as if it was yesterday. Old man Taylor had always been a bit rough around the edges and was quite the bad boy in his day while the quiet, demure Betty was very prim and proper. They made a very odd couple, but somehow they made it work. In fact, I heard they just celebrated their fortieth wedding anniversary.

Anyway, Betty attended church faithfully every Sunday. That was one thing she could never persuade her husband to do. He was afraid the walls would collapse if he dared set foot in a house of God. So old man Taylor would load Betty up in his old Ford pickup truck and drive her into town and drop her off at the Congregational Church every Sunday like clockwork; then he would leave to go play cards all day with some of his old cronies leaving Betty to catch a ride home with a friend after the service.

In the winter, Betty would bring jugs of her homemade eggnog to share at the church social hour in the parlor after the service and old man Taylor would bring jugs of the eggnog to share at his card game.

It was one early December Sunday just like any other when old man Taylor pulled into the church parking lot to drop off Betty, when he ran into an old friend and they began chatting while Betty tried to gather all of her jugs of eggnog with no help from her husband.
