FIG 3.11: FINIALS: The ridge of the roof and the end where it meets the gable were often finished with decorative tiles and finials, as in these examples. Although elaborate figures and mystical beasts could still be found on a few houses, most in this period were of a simpler form. The same simplification also applied to ridge tiles. Metal finials and cresting were popular on earlier Gothic houses, but could still be found in the late 19th century. Clay roof tiles with plain ridges became popular during the Edwardian period, to become the standard on most houses after the First World War.
