Chapter 17

Scarlett

I wake with a jolt when the car comes to a stop. I can’t believe I slept again! It feels like most of my time is spent sleeping anymore. My dragon nudges me. I put my hand to my chest, hoping she can sense my gratitude for all she has done to keep me safe.

We are at the end of a gravel road. It seems like we are in the middle of nowhere. Behind us and to the sides it looks like a desert. Sparse trees and cacti scatter the landscape. I’m reluctant to step out into the dry heat, but eager to get some answers.

Ezekiel holds his hand out to help me out and I take it. I look to the front of the car, tilting my head to try to understand what it is I’m seeing. It looks like the opening to a heavily wooded forest, but it is blurry and makes me feel like I’m looking through someone else’s glasses.

I shake my head and close my eyes to dispel the dizziness that overcomes me from looking at it too long.

“It is a portal, of sorts. It isn’t a portal to faerie, but a portal to this fae’s home. She doesn’t want uninvited guests I would assume. Basically, it is a magical security system. Anyone who entered without permission would be either repelled or in some cases receive whatever degree of harm they intended to enact on the inhabitant. It is a fascinating piece of magic.” Gavin looks in wonder at the edge of the shimmering window as he reaches out a hand towards it.

“Come on, she is expecting us.” Matthias says stepping forward through the blurriness without hesitation.

Gavin follows, Ezekiel grabs my hand, pulling me lightly through the barrier. I gasp at the cool sensation that tickles every inch of my body as we pass.

My eyes pop open. I can’t find words as I take in the surrounding clearing. There is a small cabin that looks exactly like something out of a story book. It is clean and well maintained, white wooden shutters contrast beautifully against the different shades of wood that make up the walls. There are three rocking chairs on the porch all made from different types of wood.

There is a cobblestone path that we are standing on, leading to the front steps. Each side of the path is bordered by lush deep uncut grass that makes me want to kick off my shoes and lay in it. There are flowers of every shape and size. I’ve never even seen most of them. Small lights of every color imaginable float from flower to flower. I’m instantly drawn to them.

I have my shoes off and I’m walking towards a large pink flower the size of my face before I even make a decision to do so.

“Scarlett!” Matthias’ voice cuts through my hazy movements.

I turn towards him.

“She is fine, Sir Scales a lot. Leave her be.” A croaky voice calls from the now open front door.
