EDDIE WAS tired when the movie was done. Vlad half-carried him to the bedroom and they curled up for a long nap. Eddie doubted Vlad had gotten much sleep the night before either, and it showed in how quickly the man fell asleep.

Eddie watched Vlad for a bit. His cheeks were free of stubble from the shower shave only a couple hours before. His eyelashes were as dark as his eyebrows and hair. His lips were a paler pink than Eddie’s, but against his fair skin, they stood out regardless.

Sleepiness dragged at Eddie’s eyes. He slipped closer to Vlad and rested against his chest. Vlad was larger than him, as were many people, and it was comfortable to place his head on the man’s arm and let himself drift away.

Eddie dreamed.

He was alone in a bright room. He looked around. Everything was starkly white. There was no visible light source, but it was so bright he could barely see.

“Hello,” he asked. “Is anyone here?”

There was no answer. He sank to the floor. He looked around for his shadow, but it was missing. There weren’t any shadows at all.

“Please,” he begged. “Please come back.”

He began to cry, and as his tears fell to the floor, little shadows appeared. They grew larger and larger until the room was filled with shadows.

He smiled, still on his knees. The shadow in front of him grew upward and upward until it became a man.

“Shadow!” he cried. The man didn’t have a face. He was a dark figure, shimmering around the edges.

The shadowy man began to walk away. “Shadow,” he called again.

The man turned to face him. He held out a dark hand, and now Eddie could see the man’s eyes had become real eyes—they were familiar. He got shakily to his feet and stumbled a few feet to catch the shadowy figure.

The tips of their fingers touched, and then the world dissolved.

Eddie jerked awake.

“Eddie?” Vlad asked softly. “What’s wrong?”

Eddie rubbed his eyes. “Just a weird dream.”

Vlad frowned. “Sandman?” he asked, referring to the supervillain who wandered the United States. Wherever he was, anyone sleeping nearby tended to have bizarre dreams straight from their subconscious—dreams they always remembered. But then, Eddie usually remembered his dreams. He’d trained himself to during his work on his master’s, because he’d done an internship in dream analysis.

“I don’t think so,” Eddie said. “Do you remember your dream?”

Vlad shook his head.

“Then not,” Eddie said. “It was just a strange dream, that’s all.”

“Okay,” Vlad said. He wrapped his arms around Eddie’s waist and pulled him closer. “I’m getting hungry.”

“Lunch sounds good,” Eddie said. He wasn’t sure how long they’d slept, but he felt a lot better.

“It’s almost dinner time, actually,” Vlad said, checking the bedside clock.

“Either way,” Eddie said, smiling. He followed Vlad to the kitchen.
