9 The Influencers of Choice and Decision Making

PRESENTER: Elke Weber, Columbia University

ROSHI JOAN HALIFAX: At this point in our exploration, Elke Weber will help us understand why we don’t act on global environmental problems. What holds us back? What are the cognitive and motivational challenges that we face, both as individuals and as collectives? And what about the role of attention? She also wants to address our motivational deficits, what primes action, and the role of fear.

Elke works at the intersection of psychology and economics. She’s an expert on behavioral models of judgment and decision making in conditions of risk and uncertainty. She studies how attention, emotion, and memory, and their representations in the brain, influence preference and choice. She holds many different seats at Columbia University: she’s the Jerome A. Chazen Professor of International Business at Columbia School of Business; she’s a professor of psychology; she’s also a professor at the Earth Institute; and she’s the founder and codirector of the Center for Decision Sciences and the Center for Research on Environmental Decisions.

ELKE WEBER: The psychology of action and behavior change is a very active area of behavioral and neuroscience research, with hundreds of publications. I won’t be talking about the methods or specific studies, but everything I say is actually based on many careful investigations. Let me give you an overview of where we will go. I will address two questions. First, I will ask, “Why don’t we act on environmental problems?” and provide you with some diagnoses. Then I will take those diagnoses and turn them into treatments, asking, “What can we do about the problem; how can we help people take more environmental actions?”
