Chapter Seven

“Oh, what am I doing? That’s it. I’m not going.” Nic took the pair of jeans from the overnight bag she had borrowed from April.

“You are.” April put the pants right back in. “Fayth, grab that midnight blue dress and the shoes she can wear for dinner.”

“On it. Going with the gold straps and the cinch-waist belt to match,” Fayth replied. “Grab the dream catcher earrings from her box.”

“Adding jewelry to makeup bag pocket...confirmed,” April answered.

“Are you two listening to me? You’re my best friends in the world. You’re supposed to support me,” Nic demanded. “Support me, dang it!”

“No ma’am, not on this.” Fayth took Nic’s face in her hands. “We are not letting you run out on the first adventure of your life.”

Nic spoke through smooshed lips. “What if I don’t want an adventure?”

April took her turn holding her face. “You do, baby. You just have spent so much time living the status quo and sitting on the fence. The thought of getting off it terrifies you. But you have to try at least once to break of out this mold you set for yourself.”

Nic turned away and flopped back on the bed. “You’re right. The man says he loves me, hasn’t brought it up since the night he said it, and I’m scared of taking a trip with him.”

“That’s sarcasm mixed in with some fear. I dig it,” April said. “But you want the man to profess his love on your terms and you won’t even take a step out of Westerly? How fair is that?”

“Damn, savage truth.” Nic turned her head to look at her friends standing at the foot of the bed.

“It had to be said,” Fayth agreed. “You’re not a kid anymore, Nic. You can’t hide behind the bullshit your mom put you through. It goes from being a sad story to a crutch, and right now you are leaning on it hard.”

Her friends were right, and she knew it. Nic blew out a long breath. “I am, aren’t I?”

“Big time,” they said in unison.

Nic sat up. “Let’s get me packed. I’m not a baby bird. I’m a fucking phoenix!”

“Yeah, that’s our Nicole!” Fayth pumped a fist up in the air.

“This is like a scene from a great movie,” April said, grinning. “I completely think our entire lives should be reality TV.”

And that was how Nic left Westerly, North Carolina, for another state for the first time in her life—California, no less—in a private jet with a man who seemed to see into her soul with his gorgeous eyes. He rang the bell of her front door promptly at four while she was giving them directions on how to help Jupiter for Tuesday’s deliveries. Now Nic sat in a plush, soft chocolate leather seat of a private jet, holding on to a glass of champagne for dear life while the engines powered up.

“How about you give me that before you snap the stem,” Abel said gently and took the glass from her hand. “You can have it back when we are in the air and it’s all going smoothly.
