The eclipse began at 12:02 pm and, even though the temperature was 34°C, Campbell described the weather as perfect. Campbell and Trumpler, aided by the navy, were in charge of the Einstein cameras. Melbourne Observatory astronomer, John Benjamin Hosking, and New Zealand Government Astronomer, Charles Edward Adams, were in charge of the wireless and weather measurements. Alexander Ross from the University of Western Australia recorded the position of the Moon’s shadow during the partial phases of the eclipse and deduced that totality would occur 16 seconds before the predicted time; this was vital information that came just in time to inform the photography schedule.
