Chapter Thirty-Six

Finn convinced them they needed to let off some steam when they finally entered the city walls. He knew of a tavern where there would be live music, and they allowed anyone who wanted to take the stage. Surprisingly, several of the novices decided to join, including Atlas and Commander Jon.

When Ketil and the other monster also made to join, Lillian hissed that they’d not see the sunrise if they stepped one foot within the tavern.

Thankfully, they listened. Her cutting off their private parts was probably not what Finn had meant by letting off steam.

Sam offered Astrid his arm, making it his mission to make the red-haired girl smile, and kept them entertained with wild stories from his and his brother’s adventures growing up as they walked through the bustling city while the sun set behind the castle and cast flickering shadows on the stone homes lining the pebbled road.

Despite Sam’s smile, his brown eyes darkened when someone asked about his parents. He mumbled that they had passed when he was a child, that it was only him and his brother now. Lillian locked eyes with him, the sorrow inside her mirrored in his kind eyes.

Finn, affectionate as always, took Lillian’s hand and was content walking beside her quietly, listening to Sam’s stories. Her scalp tingled, and Lillian glanced over her shoulder, catching Atlas studying them, frowning.

When Finn snorted, Lillian narrowed her eyes. “What?”

Finn grinned at her, then released her hand. “Just wanted to see if I was right.”

Lillian glared at him. “What do you mean?”

“Nothing.” Finn laughed softly. “What was that I heard about researching Valkyries earlier?”

Lillian froze, scanning the novices walking beside them.

“Don’t worry, I think everyone else was preoccupied. And it doesn’t seem like many of us have my super hearing,” Finn winked.

Lillian shook her head. “I’ll tell you later.”

“You better.” Finn grabbed her hand again.

The dim tavern was nearly empty when they arrived, and Lillian was relieved when no fire burned in the back of it; instead, all windows were open, allowing the cool evening breeze to blow through the tavern. The group spread out across different tables. Sam, Finn, Astrid, and Lillian snagged their own.

“May I join you?” They all raised their eyebrows when Atlas pointed to the empty chair.

Finn pulled it out. “Of course, Atlas. But the first drinks are on you.”

Atlas smiled at him and nodded, then walked back to the bar.

“Did he just smile, or am I actually losing it?” Astrid stared at the commander’s back.

Lillian blew out a breath. It was good to see Astrid speak again. “I think it might have been a tic,” she joked.

When Atlas returned with the drinks, some type of golden liquor, the group shared stories from their childhoods. Sam and Finn were in their prime, making the rest of them cry from laughter at their stories. When Finn told an unlikely tale about sneaking aboard a pirate ship, Lillian rolled her eyes, and Finn stuck out his tongue at her.

“So Atlas, how did you
