Chapter 13

I CALLED MY sister first, and she picked up on the fourth ring.

“Tara?” Felicity whispered, her voice sleep-groggy. “What’s wrong?”

I slumped with relief. “Hey. I ran into some trouble, and I wanted to make sure the trouble didn’t find you and Mom.”

“What trouble?” she asked, more alert.

“It’s okay now. Judah and I are safe,” I said. “But could you check on Mom? Make sure the house is locked up. Take your phone with you and stay on the line with me.”

There were some rustling sounds.

“Mom’s right here, and she’s asleep,” Felicity said. “I’m going to walk through the house, check all the doors and windows, and look in on the kids.”

While I waited for her report, the thrum of the skull in the box that I held under my left arm like a football thumped through me. The elbow I’d banged was talking to me. I juggled the box and my phone, switching the device to my left hand and the box to my right so my bad arm didn’t have to bear the weight of the Dullahan skull.

I put Fel on speaker so I could type out a quick text to Ray. I thanked him for saving us and asked him to let me know he’d escaped Shaw’s goons so I wouldn’t worry about him. I appreciated the rescue, but my gratitude was tainted with suspicion. Had he been following us? If so, what had he hoped to gain?

“Everything’s still locked,” came Fel’s voice through the phone. “Kids are asleep. I tested the wards around the house, and nothing’s been disturbed. I think all’s well.”

“Okay, thanks for checking,” I said. “I’m sorry I woke you up.”

“No, I’m glad you did,” she said. “Are you going to be able to come home soon?”

“I’m not sure,” I said, glancing down at the box, its metal threads glinting in the moonlight. “There are a couple things I need to do first, and I don’t know how long they’ll take. Go back to bed and try to get some more sleep.”

“I’m going to add more wards, first,” she said, and I knew by her tone she wasn’t going to be sleeping that night. I felt bad about it but checking in with her had been the right thing to do. “Just be careful, Tara. Please.”

“Always.”

We disconnected. Judah had finished his conversation a few seconds earlier and was waiting to talk to me.

“Roger says there’s been nothing suspicious around the house,” Judah said. “I didn’t give him specifics, but I warned him to be on the lookout because we’d done something that may prompt Shaw to try to use your family to threaten you.”

My heart went cold as a sickening wave of certainty hit me. “Not may. He will . He’s threatened me with Mom’s and Fel’s lives for years. But this”—I tilted my head at the box—“this will be enough for him to finally make good on the threats.”

I didn’t say it, but what I’d done might also be enough for Shaw to get rid of me.
