The partners met up in the Cabin the next morning to find that Rupty, at Hella’s request, had brought up a simple breakfast to nourish them as they refined their plans.

John pulled up the navigation directions on the big screen. “If we head out now, we can arrive right about noon, Gliknore time.”

“Might as well get it over with.” Chuckie maintained a level of optimistic pessimism.

“There’s only one Gate to pass through,” John went on. “Meehix, you’re in charge of getting us there.”

“You know how I love to fly.” She hopped into the pilot’s seat. “What are you going to be doing?”

“Track down the G-Crack 480, make sure it’s loaded, and take it to Chippie, where I can also check on the grappling ropes and whatever else we might need.”

“And me?” Chuckie was afraid to ask. “What do I need to do?”

“Oh, just hang out and look handsome…and maybe try to figure out any passwords we might need to crack into their computers.”

John found the 480. Although he wasn’t able to test-fire it, he reasoned that the pirates had used it often enough that it should be in good working order. He checked and found that it had four large cartridges preloaded.

It was an awkward weapon to hold, with a barrel on each end. Double-checking the cartridges, he noticed that two were facing one way and two in the opposite direction.

Son of a bitch. He noticed that the trigger was straight, not curved, and found a switch on the side with two arrows pointing fore and aft. Two directional… Cool!

John had Chippie all set up by the time Meehix had flown them to a safe hovering distance above Gliknore. She set Shippella to hover and surrendered the pilot’s seat to Tazer.

“Are you sure that I have to come along?” Chuckie was having more than a few second thoughts.

“Yes.” John was firm. “We can’t leave you on Shippella while Meehix and I invade, then come back to pick you up and go back down for the data snatch. You won’t have to leave Chippie until it’s all clear,” he assured him, “but time might be of the essence, so yes, you have to come along.”

The partners headed out of Chippie’s docking bay, and John cruised them down. He was still getting used to the fact that Chippie was no longer the Shippewa that they’d had so many adventures in. The best analogy he could come up with was that he was flying the caterpillar that had eventually cocooned and had come out on the other side as the butterfly now known as Shippella.

“John?”

“Huh?” he turned to Meehix.

“You seemed a little dreamy there for a minute,” she commented from the co-pilot’s seat.

“Right, right.” He nodded. “This isn’t the best time to get lost in nostalgia.”

As they drew closer, the view of the mining compound matched the aerial photos. They didn’t have a sighting of the creature, but none of them doubted that it was lurking down there somewhere.

John landed them on the building’s roof, close to the front.
