Chapter 5
Phobias and screen memories
Don Zanghi was curious about my neck phobia, I was totally intolerant about anything, or anybody touching my neck; just having a conversation about touching my neck would give me the heebeegeebees. The strange part was both my daughters shared phobias very similar to mine. Marlo had a problem with her neck and veins; Heather has recurring abdominal pain problems so persistent sheâs already had two exploratory surgeries. She was also very phobic of anybody touching her belly button.
Don had gone to lunch with us after our hypnosis session, and watched us go through ameriative contortions just listening to him discuss our odd behavior. Heather was the first one to volunteer to have her phobia addressed in hypnosis, and when Heatherâs session was over, anyone could touch her belly button without causing her to even flinch; and to this day she is fine. We made a deal to keep our private hypnosis sessions private to prevent contamination of our stories. This way Don can use our tapes to verify certain of our shared experiences. Consequently all I knew that was one session had released her from this belly button phobia, and I was next. I believed Iâd got the phobia of my next being touched from being hanged from a little plum tree when my sister and I were playing cowboys. We got tired of hanging the teddy bear and my sister decided I should be the bad guy and be hanged for my crimes. My grandmother saw me dangling from the jump rope in the reflection of our backdoor that was part way open. She happened to be cutting heads off smelts and ran out into the yard to cut me down with her butcher knife, Iâm sure the neighbors had thought sheâd finally lost it. I really donât remember being cut down, or what happened afterwards. But we did lose jump rope privileges for quite a while.
On October 18th 1994 in this scenario in my mind, Don placed me into a deep trance and had me focus on the experience of someone touching my neck. Don asks me to go back to the original experience that created the problem. Iâm sitting in the middle of my grandmother's bed in the attic bedroom, Iâm wearing light weight blue striped seer sucker pajamas, and Iâm still quite warm. The bed is higher than my narrow single bed, thereâs a row of windows that parallel the bed low to the floor; the ceiling slopes down to these windows and Iâm afraid if I fall out of bed Iâll fall out the window too. I have reason to be afraid, Iâve fallen out of that window before. Whenever I have to sleep in my grandmotherâs bed it is because we have company spending the night or some grownup activity is going on down stairs that might keep me awake. Usually, my mother will come up and share the bed after I have fallen asleep.
A snarling head of a bobcat hangs on the wall overlooking the bed, my uncle shot him and had it stuffed.
