Opposites Attract

Fighting against the talisman’s strange power, Sophie landed on the floor with a thud then skidded to a stop. “Ouch!” She shook her hand and the talisman detached itself. It dropped to the floor with a CLANK and rolled into a corner of the small room.

“W-what?” She shuffled backwards as far away from it as possible in the small room, and then she studied her surroundings. There were no windows or doors, but only four walls, a ceiling, and a floor. She placed her hand against the stone wall—cold, and rough, jagged in some spots. The stone encased room was square and only big enough for one or two people. All at once, fear gripped her as she realized she was in a C-Zircon7 box made from stone older than most galaxies. She dropped her head in her hands. Someone had done their homework—the power to transwill was weak when closely surrounded by ancient stone. If trying to transwill from inside C-Zircon7, the transwiller became absorbed in the stone, becoming part of the box itself, until someone came along and released the unfortunate spirit. Indicators had been programmed to give the transwill an extra boost of energy. But she didn’t have hers. Coe. “Thanks a lot,” she grumbled.

She slapped her hands on her knees. “Ow!” Her palm ached where the talisman had been attached. She rubbed her hands and let tears stream down her face. “Why is this happening to me? I only wanted to help.” Her voice echoed in the empty chamber. Cut it out, Sophie. There are more important things to worry about, she thought. She wiped away her tears and stood up. Keeping her back to the stone wall, she inched around the perimeter of her small cell, taking great care to avoid the talisman, which no longer glowed green.

The only light came from a narrow, three-foot tall, six-sided pillar set in the center of the room. Its smooth, flat top contained a hole about five inches in diameter, and a dim light shown from the hole. Careful not to touch the pillar, she peered down its narrow shaft, but could not see the bottom. She returned to pacing the room, stepping over the talisman each time she passed by. Her thoughts kept returning to the curious hole and the strange light. She bit her lip and approached it. Her fingers hoovered over the hole, and then she snapped them back, remembering what had happened when she touched the talisman. After two more turns around the room, she stepped back to the pillar. Sucking in a breath, her quivering fingers lowered to the ominous hole and lightly brushed over it.

All at once, a piercing light burst from its depths, lighting the room like a beacon. Inside the bright light, three triangles danced, flickered, and flashed. “I’ve seen that pattern before.” She glanced down at the talisman with its three triangles, and her heart pounded. The light wavered then slowly decreased in size as the hole began to close.
