Additionally, seven recipes discuss longevity and immortality as two subsequently occurring stages, and five recipes contain both terms in no discernible order.

After examining the order in which recipes discuss the benefits of longevity and immortality, except for the talismanic recipe which states that alchemically-transformed immortals are inferior, there is little evidence that the text’s redactors conceptualized these goals in a hierarchical fashion, such as that presented in the Baopuzi. Ge Hong provides an early description of a hierarchy of immortals based on their level of attainment. The clearest instance of this notion is in a citation from an otherwise unknown Xianjing 仙經 (Scripture of Immortality) which states:

Superior masters who raise their bodies and ascend into the void are called celestial immortals. Average masters who roam among the famous mountains are called terrestrial immortals. Inferior masters who first die and then molt are called corpse-liberated immortals. (Baopuzi 2:9a; see Ware 1966, 47-8)
