The Hidden Changeling
The link between the pirates and Edgar. The Grand Duke of Cremonaâs missing granddaughter and the girl named Betty. The Freya fluorite that could only be found in Wallcave. The mysterious impostor claiming to be the Blue Knight Earl. All of this information was relayed to Lydia at once, and for a while, her head wouldnât stop spinning. However, she now understood why Edgar had raided her ship in order to stop her from going to the village alone. Far from being his usual mischief, he had genuinely deemed it too dangerous.
Lydia stood on the deck gazing out at the sea. Its water had been dyed a blackish blue by the oncoming dusk. When the breeze was suddenly blocked by another body, she looked up to see who had joined her.
âWe shall stop at the nearest port before it gets too dark.â Edgar stood beside her where she leaned on the handrail.
âAre we not taking this ship all the way to Yorkshire?â
âI, for one, would rather sleep in a proper bed than doze in the bilge. We shall find lodgings by the port, then continue our journey by train tomorrow. Iâve told Nico he may stay on board with Lotta and her crew, who will be taking the ship the rest of the way. When we arrive at the village, we shall introduce ourselves as passing travelers.â
As Lydia nodded, she felt their shoulders brush, reminding her of Edgarâs claim that she was beginning to fall for him. All at once, her chest tightened again. Meanwhile, his smile was kind as he gazed at her calmly.
âThis is getting me awfully nostalgic,â he said.
âFor what?â
âFor when we first met.â
Lydia frowned as the memory came to her too. âNow that you mention it, I suppose this is the second time you have kidnapped me by ship.â
âIs it?â
You would remember were you not in the habit of forgetting anything that inconveniences you.
âI can only recall spending a magical night at sea with you.â
âPlease consider your phrasing when you reminisce.â
âIt was destiny. The first encounter between two lovers. Do you not think so?â
âI do not think so, no.â
âYou will come around in time.â
Not even in an eternity.
âIncidentally, things ended between Betty and me a long time ago. Do try not to allow your imagination to run wild should we find her.â
Lotta had briefly mentioned that Edgar and Betty had been lovers when he was in America. It had made Lydia feel oddly restless. She knew it shouldnât have bothered her, but somehow it did, and she wasnât sure how to process the information. Instead of dwelling on it, she had decided to devote herself solely to finding Betty in her capacity as a fairy doctor.
âSupposing this really is a changeling case, the amount of time that has passed will make it even more difficult to find Miss Betty.â
âWhy is that?â
âThe more time one spends in the fairy world, the more one becomes accustomed to it.â
âI see. Well, I suppose it isnât necessarily a bad thing if she is happier there.
