NINETEEN

“How did she know I was at the game?”

“Simple, Dude.” Sumo didn’t look up from his cell phone. “Your Mom’s got radar. All Moms do. They gotta. It’s like a law or something.” His thumbs were power tapping the screen. “Listen to this. There are all these people going on about Dylan sightings. Claiming they know him and have seen him all over Brea.” Sumo read some more and cocked his head. “Has he really been to the Brea Mall? Anyway, people are posting they saw him at the game last night and want to know where he’ll be today.”

Am I going somewhere?

“Sumo!” Casey threw both hands up. “Get a grip. Mom’s freaking out. Dylan’s on puppy probation and I’m going to be grounded until I go to college.”

Sumo stopped, his thumbs in midair. “Your mom’s cool. At least she cares about you.”

Casey snorted. “So does yours.”

“Did I tell you she’s getting married again?”

“Who is it this time?”

“The guy who owns a winery in Paso Robles. You’ve met him. Tons of money.”

“He seemed okay.” Casey moved his juice glass aside when Ingrid came in with a plate of waffles and set them down. “Looks great. Thanks, Ingrid.”

“You’re welcome, Casey. Eat your breakfast before it gets cold, Sumo.”

His fingers kept at his cell phone. “Yes, Ingrid.”

She put a bowl of scrambled eggs on the floor for Dylan. Dylan sniffed happily. Thanks, Ingrid.

Ingrid wiped her hands on her apron. “Casey, your mother called the house phone. She’s on her way.”

Casey slid his eyes to his cell phone. Four missed calls. Mom. “Thanks, Ingrid.”

“Wait until you hear this.” Sumo bounced in his seat and looked up from his cell phone. “People want to name a holiday after Dylan.”

Dylan Day?

Casey stuffed waffle into his mouth. “Why do I always get grounded every time I mess up? Aiden never did.”

“He’s got a charmed life.” Sumo shrugged. “Even people who get mad at him, still like him. Give it up. You can’t compete.”

Casey’s cell phone vibrated on the table, and he glanced at the screen. “Guess who?”

Sumo laughed. “Isn’t it like three in the morning in South Korea?”

“Probably, but you know Aiden. Life’s a party and he’s hosting.” He picked it up. “Hi. I’m at Sumo’s.” Casey switched to FaceTime. He propped his cell phone against his juice glass, and Aiden filled the screen. “What’s up?”

“Hi, guys.”

Aiden? Dylan scratched at Casey’s leg.

Casey reached down and put Dylan on the chair next to him. He scooted him close and angled the cell phone so Aiden could see him. “Say hi to Dylan.”

Dylan’s backside wiggled and he slipped off the chair. Ow!

Casey helped him up again.

“Hey.” Aiden leaned in. “Mom says you’re having a great time.”

I am! Dylan gave a happy woof and then stopped. Is that okay?

“So, Casey, you got your cast off.”

Casey turned in his chair and shot his leg in the air. “Yeah.”

“How’s it going with Dylan? What has he destroyed? Anything left of the house?”

Dylan and Casey looked at each other, confused.

I’ve been busy being important.
