Closing Time

I considered the offer of psychiatric help but wasn’t quite ready to accept it. The hormones were messing with me enough; I couldn’t add the weight of some lethargy-laced pill that left me feeling as if I were wearing cement shoes. Thankfully, the hormones started to level off, and so, too, did my emotions.

The summer days blurred by as I spun in the whirlwind. Work, home, health, health insurance, Botox expense, surgery expense, house-related costs, the car, the cat, the second job, the speaking engagements, the book, the business of the book, the bills. Every facet of my life collided together in just a few months.

After much hesitation, I agreed to sign the closing documents on the house. My stipulation was that Krissy had to agree in advance to cover all closing costs. I’d been paying the bills since January, the mortgage since May, plus doing all the prep for showing. She made far more money than I did and could afford to pony up the dough.

She used the fact we were never able to marry so we couldn’t legally divorce to her advantage. She was able to take 100 percent of our financial worth, and I had absolutely no legal recourse.

I merged onto the interstate and was brought to a stop, wedged between an orange construction barrel and another car. With the iconic Cherry and Spoon sculpture, which Minneapolis is famous for, just off to my right, my phone rang.

“Jennifer!” The name felt so wrong, so backwards, so abrasive. I didn’t correct the realtor anymore. It did no good.

“Hi Lyndon,” I said.

He settled into conversation about the closing date. I inched forward in my small black Scion. “This is a delicate sale now, Jennifer. We need to be sure we give the buyers—and Krissy—what they want. Ideally they’d like to take possession mid-September. Krissy wants to go with that.”

“Mid-month?” I checked my blind spot. I dislike driving while talking on the phone. Though legal in Minnesota, it shouldn’t be.

I explained that mid-month possession would mean I’d have to pay the mortgage, the moving expenses, deposit on a rental, and at least a half month’s rent on that rental. That was too much for me to afford.

“If that’s the date they’re set on and this is, in part, Krissy’s wish, then I won’t be paying the mortgage or house-related bills for September.”

Taken aback once more by my bold stance, Lyndon hesitated, then explained that the sellers usually take care of that. I didn’t care. I was on a mission to be more assertive and not be walked on. I certainly wasn’t going to be walked on by Krissy. She could pay the mortgage for September rolled into the closing costs. I gave her no choice but to do just that when September rolled around and I didn’t pay it.

By that point, I’d had to get it figured out: find a way to get out of the house and settled into a new place to live. Find a way to get my surgery scheduled and done.
