CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT
Thereâs one quick cure for feeling better after being rejected. Kristina knew exactly what she needed to lift her mood. She might not get to enjoy Georgeâs cute naked butt any longer, but she could certainly enjoy a new pair of strappy little sandals to tide her over for now. Oh Lord, the power of the shoe. Kristina didnât care what was going wrong in her life; a new pair of shoes would fix it. The number of shoes in her closet (465 to be exact, or 466, if you counted her snorkel flippers) gave a clue to the number of times she fixed a mess in her life.
Usually, the local shoe warehouseâs sale rack would do the trick. Not this time. Kristina went straight to Jimmy Choo. She needed to pull out the big credit cards to get over the disappointment in her poor judgment of George. A lot of time waiting for him to notice her had been wasted just to figure out he wasnât the quality of man worth the effort. Now, all she needed was a cute pair of sandals, a hot new color of lipstick, maybe a fun new style of false eyelashes, and what the hell, a box of decadently priced chocolates: nuts and chews, of course.
Kristina walked out of the mall with her hands full of shopping bags, knowing George Handy would soon be a vague memory. Yes, she also knew therapy was cheaper but not nearly as effective.

That evening, Poodles and Kristina made plans to meet at their favorite Mexican food restaurant, Caliente Consuela, for a couple of margaritas and a basket or two of yummy carbohydrate-dripping tortilla chips covered with fresh, chunky homemade salsa. Peterâs ego could handle the nickname Poodles. He loved a spa chair for a mani-pedi, and proud of it. Gay men wished heâd swing their way, straight women were glad he didnât, and if you asked Kristina, the verdict was still out either way.
Peter assured Kristina on the phone that what he wanted to talk with her about couldnât wait. That got her attention. Five oâclock couldnât come soon enough to hear the juicy dirt too important to dish about on the phone.
Empty parking spots were everywhere, but Kristinaâs feet in her new heels would never make it across the concrete parking lot to the restaurant. Although adorable, the straps were already cutting into the sides of her feet. Five cars deep, she waited for the valet to open her car door. Slowly, she stretched her bronze-tinted legs with her sassy Jimmy Choo sandals to the curb. Precisely calculating, she showed just enough bare leg to be seductive. The valet, darling but barely legal, handed Kristina her claim ticket while staring her up and down, or so it appeared to Kristina. Feeling sexy, she fantasized the young valet wanting a piece of this sultry cougar. She felt his eyes checking her out. He began to say something. Kristina thought it best to appear mysterious, so she turned around before he could finish his sentence.
