night school. No wonder the poor girl was so fed up when I first met her.'

'What did she do at night school?' Anna asked.

'Acting classes,' Vida told her, with a minute curl of her perfect mouth. 'Some phoney little place up in Notting Hill Gate. They did a lot of Brecht. You know, mime and improvisation, lots of theory and no technique. Poor Dee.'

'Was she any good?' Anna asked curiously.

'Not at all.' Vida said with mild superciliousness. 'She was too stiff, had no spontaneity, if you see what I mean. Actually, it always amazed me she bothered at all. She was too private and secretive; too sort of tucked up. But then we all fantasize, don't we? Perhaps she had Aquarius rising?'

She sat down opposite Anna, crossing her slender legs with a natural abandonment that Dee might have envied.

'In the end she knew she wasn't getting anywhere, so she gave it up. She could never let go of herself. That's what I mean. She hardly drank at all and she never smoked. I used to smoke now and then when I could afford it, like just to unwind, I mean. But Dee didn't seem to want to unwind. Like she was afraid if she relaxed too much she'd fall apart. You know what?" Vida leaned forward confidingly. 'She once told me about this weird dream she had where she started undressing in front of a mirror. And she couldn't stop, although she knew she was doing something bad. And then, as she took off the last garment and got down to bare skin, whoof, she vanished!'

'Poor Dee,' Anna said sadly, wondering how profound a dream like that might be.

'I know,' Vida continued. 'It sort of sums her up, doesn't it? I mean, she was always locking the bathroom door and wearing pyjamas in bed. Actually, I think I used to embarrass her before we got used to each other. I guess I don't know what it's like to be modest.'

'When did she get interested in films?' Anna asked, using the pause to change the subject before she had to hear just how immodest Vida was. She recognized 'Last Date' as Voitek's present tune.
