Chapter Fifteen
Moving into High Gear
Monday was everyoneâs last full day off. On our team, Frank and I were the only ones with set plans. Frank was driving me to my first appointment with the new doctor. At the exit to the lot, we had to sign out and leave our lanyards with security. We still got there early. I signed in and filled out the usual paperwork. Frank had my records from the other doctors. It wasnât until we were back in the exam room that I learned Doctor Christy Hollander was a Gold Elf.
She was warm and friendly, and I didnât feel any condemnation for being with Frank. I hadnât realized how much Iâd worried about that until she treated Frank like any other expecting father. It was a relief feeling the tension drain from my shoulders. She told us that normally this is the time when couples started childbirth classes, except that we already knew this wouldnât be natural childbirth. She didnât do classes for high risk pregnancies as the parents tended to be stressed out as it was. (And I suspected she didnât want the high risk parents to freak out the other parents.) The babies continued to grow at their usual pace, so my twenty-two week pregnancy looked a lot more like a twenty-seven week pregnancy. Frank produced a form for her to fill out for the visit. I didnât really feel up to exploring Anaheim today, so after my appointment we went straight back to the set. We did take my golf cart to the food court so I could indulge in some post appointment ice cream. It wasnât as good as the place in Santa Barbara, but itâs hard to go wrong with ice cream.
Most of us stayed in for dinner again tonight. Boris was the only exception. He said he was going to eat at the food court and scope out the options. I was certain he wasnât talking about the food selection.
The Fourth of July dawned bright and clear. Boris came in with our morning âmailâ. It was our call sheet for tomorrow. All team members had to report at eight for costuming. They would be filming at the mage tower at nine. The first heat would run from ten to twelve and it was Instant Karma versus Lawyers, Swords and Money. The Ghost Raptors were in the second heat against the Iron Destroyers from one to three. The Flaming Griffons faced down the Lovely Angels from four to six. Each challenge was run with the team captain and four other members. I wondered if the teams would actually finish the challenges on that schedule. It seemed awfully ambitious to me.
To make it interesting, the team members not actively running the challenge would be watching the competition from the tavern through a magic scrying portal, courtesy of the Enchantress. I thought the âscrying portalâ
