Chapter Twenty

Repercussions

Following the fight, such as it was, Christian was taken to a nearby hospital and checked for injuries. When none were found, he was discharged, and a piece was run in the newspaper about it. After that, I didn’t hear a thing until Firewick dropped a second newspaper onto my table as I was eating my dinner, around two weeks after the event.

“Read,” he commanded, and dropped into a chair.

I shrugged and picked up the paper. The headline was bold: Beloved Warrior, Christian Anderson, Suffers Mental Breakdown. I nodded in approval, then started reading.

“Following the disastrous battle in the Great Amphitheater, Christian Anderson was discharged into the city. Doctors reported no injuries, though several psychologists warned that he seemed to be suffering from some sort of paranoia. Concern mounted, and a search party was sent after him, but by then, he had escaped into the wilderness.

“Five days passed without word, and then a hunter traveling up to the Northern Empire happened to hear sobbing coming from a nearby cabin. Upon investigation, he discovered Christian in a bed, rocking back and forth, moaning about ‘poor souls.’ Given the presence of minotaurs near the end of the battle, we can only assume that he is referring to the Massacre of the Righteous Way, a battle that our dedicated readers will be familiar with. So many deaths that such a great man was unable to prevent…”

I gagged, then continued. “When approached, Christian easily overpowered the hunter and fled into the mountains. Since then, several other warriors have reported seeing him near various dungeons, but none have been able to engage him. It is unknown when or if Christian will recover, or if he will fall prey to the monsters of the wilderness. In the meantime, several parties of warriors have been dispatched to locate him, with the majority heading toward the Wild Lands, as it is expected that he will eventually make his way there. Further updates will be provided.”

I smiled and folded the paper. “Well, it seems like he’s taken care of.”

Firewick just sighed and shook his head. “I thought you were going to kill him, not do this.”

“Isn’t this better?” I held up my hands in protest. “He’s scared, and he knows that someone knows about his crimes.” A hand tightened painfully upon my neck, and I realized how close I was coming to slipping and revealing something… unpleasant.

Sorry! It was an accident! Besides, he knows already.

“I honestly don’t know, Greg.” Firewick just shrugged. “Everyone’s got to die sometime. This? This is torture.”

I made no answer, and Firewick eventually moved on.

“Still, I suppose that you only triggered something that he was already tormented about. If his conscience was clear, or if he knew his guilt but didn’t care, he would have been angry and demanded your head on a platter. As is, I suspect that you merely hastened something that would have happened anyway.
