Chapter twelve

The Vote

“They’re not coming out, are they?” Keeley muttered.

“No, it doesn’t look like it.” Lance sighed and waved at the watchers. Even if he mocked them, they still refused to come out.

“So now what?” Neil said, idly digging at the ground.

“We could burn the fort down,” Yanesh offered.

“Is there something you’re not telling me, about fires?” Lance said, raising an eyebrow.

“What?” Yanesh said.

“That’s the second time you’ve offered to burn everything down,” Matt pointed out.

“It’s efficient!” their mage protested.

“Right. I want the court to hear and understand, I know nothing about the incidences of arson committed by Yanesh Vaidya,” Matt spoke out loud and theatrically.

“Hey!” Yanesh protested.

The group laughed, but quieted after a moment when Lance held his hand up. “Fun’s over. We still need to figure out how to clear this dungeon. And I’m not looking forward to spending the night here, are you?”

Everyone murmured their agreement with his statement.

“Keeley, can you drop your tear gas into that hall we saw?” Lance asked. “Maybe we can smoke them out.”

“I can try. I need to see inside, though, and with the walls….” Keeley gestured, showing the problem they faced.

“I can fix that!” Sarah said, grinning.

“Fix?” Keeley asked, frowning.

“Yeah! Leave it to me. I’ll get Sarah sight of the inside.” She nodded enthusiastically.

Lance eyed her suspiciously, but dismissed the matter after a moment. “Even if we smoke them out, we don’t know how many there are. It’s possible they aren’t coming to us because of the losses they’d face, but if they have double the number, they’ll definitely overrun us.”

The group nodded in acknowledgement of his point. While it had been easy enough for the melee fighters to deal with the few dwarves that had managed to make it to them, if there were more, the group would certainly be forced to fight separately again.

“So we build a fort,” Neil said, gesturing around. “Easy enough to do.”

“Except there’s no guarantee the ones in the village are all there are. Haven’t you noticed how the dwarves seem to spawn faster?” Matt muttered. “I’d bet there are spawn points in the grasslands.”

“Shit.”

“Exactly,” Lance said. “I don’t think we can afford to wait too long. And since the tear gas doesn’t really do damage, we can’t exactly kill them all by blocking the way out.”

“So what are you saying?” Neil said.

“I’m wondering if we should just try to hold them at the gates.” Lance gestured down to the walls. “Only one entrance or exit. They don’t seem to use much ranged weaponry. If we post-up close to the doors, with crowd control stopping people from actually coming out and Protestor’s Tears in the back, we can hold them and wear them down.”

“Go in through the front door, guns blazing?” Sarah said, eyes wide and hungry. “Sounds like my kind of plan.”

“It’s insane. What if we can’t keep them contained? What if they’re too many or too strong?” Neil shook his head. “We should hit them out here, take them out with the arrows till they die.
