Chapter 27
I studied the massive stone doors before me with a critical eye, recalling my earlier attempt to channel my inner Aragorn. Determined to find redemption, I cautiously approached and deliberately placed my hands on either side of the double doors.
Alora, a step back to my side, was suspiciously engrossed in studying a particularly fascinating section of the dungeon wall.
Deigning to ignore her, I walked forward confidently, pressing gently on the doors with my arms as I went to prevent another spill.
Except that this set of doors was much more solid than the last, and they didnât budge an inch, causing me to damn near smash my face into them.
At this point, Aloraâs shoulders were violently shaking as she studied the wall harder than ever.
Gritting my teeth in embarrassment, I planted my feet and gave the doors a hard shove. This time, the heavy stone doors mercifully creaked open, so I mustered up my remaining dignity and strode forward to face the goblin king, Alora, now all business, hot on my heels.
Thank God I didnât fall this time, I thought as I nearly recoiled in disgust at what I saw.
The room, especially the floor, was vile, and that was being generous. An overpowering smell of rot wafted up from the scattered remains of decaying corpses scattered throughout the chamber
There, at the epicenter of the stench and filth, sitting atop a macabre throne of sewn flesh and bone, was the big cheese himself.
He certainly lived up to his name, Iâll grant him that. I felt the urge to strike him down just for how fucking ugly he was.
He rose to his feet as we approached, giving us a clear view of his dubious glory. Grimjaw the Hideous stood at an impressive eight feet, by my estimation, and his body was a mess of scars, boils, and muscle, all on disturbing display as he preened in his sullied loincloth.
My eyes raked over his sickly, yellow skin as he turned and hefted a massive curved sword leaning against his throne.
He had to use a one handed grip on the huge weapon since his left hand was missing. In lieu of the appendage, he had a crude iron claw that looked like it had been welded onto his wrist by someone who only had the faintest idea how to work an acetylene torch.
The studâs face was a ghost of its former self. His original lower jaw was just gone. The missing body part had been poorly replaced by the jawbone of another creature, and the surgery wasnât even remotely healed. The skin was still missing and the tissue connecting the jawbone to his face was inflamed and swollen.
Further inspection was halted as the battle began as soon as he turned back towards us, hefting his weapon. With a roar that set his jaw at an unsightly angle, the massive goblin charged straight toward us, sending fleshy bones flying.
Alora broke off in a sprint to flank him, launching a knife as she went. With barely
