The light supper would have fed a rural family for a week. Several of the male guests became loud and flushed, but not Kipping, for he was sparing in his drinking. Eventually the men called for tobacco, and the ladies returned to the withdrawing room. Before they had all settled in chairs around the fireplace, Princess Emily summoned Maddy with an imperious toss of her head, even more horselike. Maddy obediently followed her out of earshot of the others.

For once she spoke quietly.

“Loved the way you squelched Wybrow, but what caused that little contretemps when you arrived?”

With anyone else, Maddy would have said, “What contretemps?” but lying to royalty was a serious matter.

“My family’s lands used to adjoin the earl’s estate at Norcaster. They are now part of the earl’s estate at Norcaster.”

“Ah. And are the title deeds a trifle smudged? Or bloodstained?”

“Both.”

“Then I hope,” said the princess, “that Master Kipping makes him pee blood in his britches. Come.” She strode back to join the others.
