CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Reanna and I were sipping our drinks, watching, but trying not to stare, as Henry spoke to Deborah. When he finished up, he stopped at the bar for a drink, then came and sat down next to Reanna. Leaning in, he whispered, “She thinks it’s Francesca. According to her, Wes and Francesca were having an affair, but he broke it off and she killed him.” He took a sip of his drink. “Oh, and the good news Wes wanted to tell me? Supposedly, he asked Deborah to marry him and she said yes.”

Looking at Henry closely, I could see indecision. “But you don’t believe her?”

“Well, she wasn’t wearing a ring. She’s wanted this for years. Wouldn’t you be wearing a ring?”

I immediately thought of Liam’s proposal, and butterflies fluttered in my stomach. Had I said yes right away, you can be darn sure I’d be wearing the ring.

Reanna smiled. “I didn’t wait, that’s for sure!”

I told them what I learned from Francesca. “I don’t think they were having an affair.”

Henry ran his hand over his chin. “I don’t think so either. But why would Deborah lie?”

Before we could discuss it any further, people trickled in, and soon our table was almost full. Ciara, Reanna, myself and Fiona were almost giddy about seeing the bridesmaid dresses. Reanna pulled out her phone from her purse and stuck it in her pocket. “Fiona and I stopped at a wedding shop this morning. We found a dress this morning we really liked.”

Ciara asked, “Please tell me it will not make us look like a giant tomato.” She smiled.

“No, the dress we found this morning was sleeveless with a ruched bodice and layered bottom.” She stopped. “What am I thinking? I took pictures.” She pulled her phone from her pocket and handed it to Ciara.”

“Oh, that’s lovely. It might be a little chilly though in September.” Ciara handed me the phone.

Since I didn’t know what “ruched” was, I was glad to see the picture. Looking at it, ruched must be another name for pleated material, which crisscrossed in the back with a triangle peek showing skin. The crisscross came around the front, over the hips, then flowed out into layers. It was beautiful. I handed Reanna back her phone.

Deborah, in a gold gown, walked up to the podium and turned on the microphone. “Please help yourself to cocktails. They will serve dinner in a few minutes, then we’ll all enjoy the fashion show presenting Westcott’s Bridesmaid Collection.” Then she walked over and sat down next to Vanessa Clifford.

The dinner was prime rib, potatoes, with a vegetable medley. It was quite delicious and there was a cherry tart as the dessert. Once finished, I sat back and tried to relax, but my senses were going crazy, and I couldn’t help but wonder if it was the excitement over the show, or something else.

At eight o’clock, the fashion show began. Once again, there was a brochure on our seats and I couldn’t wait to look at the latest designs.
