Chapter 8

Steve drove toward Jayson’s house, with Brent by his side. He wasn’t sure how this whole thing would play out, but he was hoping for the best and expecting the worst. Brent stared out the passenger-side window, his shoulders slumped and his eyes puffy and red from crying. Steve hated seeing his mate so upset. Normally, he could fix anything, but this was out of his control.

“He’s our mate. He’ll feel the pull. He won’t be able to deny us.” Steve said, but he wasn’t sure who he was trying to convince.

As upset as Brent was, Steve was hurting as well. He kept up a strong front, though, knowing that Brent needed him to keep it together. When they finally reached Jayson’s house, Steve parked his car in the driveway next to Jayson’s vehicle and climbed out. Walking to the passenger side, he opened the door and held out his hand for Brent. Arm-in-arm, they walked to the small porch.

Knocking at the door, he tried to wait patiently. When Jayson didn’t answer, Steve rang the doorbell. “Jayson, are you home? It’s Steve and Brent. We just want to talk to you.”

Something felt wrong, but Steve couldn’t put his finger on it. As the seconds turned into minutes, Steve started tapping his foot.

“I’m gonna look around the house.” Steve didn’t want to intrude on Jayson’s privacy, but he was desperate to talk to the man. He couldn’t just walk away without having a conversation.

He walked around the house, peering through windows, but he couldn’t see a thing. They were all closed, denying him a mere glimpse. Growing frustrated, Steve walked around the entire property, hoping that Jayson might make an appearance. He knocked on the back door and again received no response.

What the hell happened?

He’d gone to sleep last night with both his mates, and now everything felt as if it were falling apart.

For some reason, he kept reaching the same conclusion. Tayte. The man had been flirting with him and Brent since they’d met years ago, but he never thought anything of it, since Tayte was a fox shifter. He knew about matings and what they meant. But, having the other man inside his kitchen talking to Jayson didn’t feel right. Jayson seemed irritated by Tayte last night at the party, so why would he talk to him this morning? It wasn’t adding up.

“Jayson!” Steve called out. “Please…”

He was on the verge of begging. If only Jayson would give him thirty seconds, he knew he could get everything straightened out. Shaking his head, Steve stared down as he walked back toward the front of the house. When he turned the corner, Brent was sitting on one of the stairs, with his phone to his ear.

“Oh God,” Brent breathed out, his face turning pale, as fear filled his eyes.

“What!?” Steve demanded. He wasn’t sure how much more bad news he could take. He already felt as though he was reaching the end of his emotional calm.

“We’re on our way.” Brent slowly stood up.
