Chapter Fifteen

When Alison and Mason raced to the engine room, they found Drysi and Hana waiting for them. Abner didn’t want to lower the shield until he was ready but once she described the lightning, he dropped it immediately. To everyone’s surprise, no new monsters arrived. It was then that she realized something she hadn’t noticed on the way back to the engine room.

“There wasn’t any fog inside the ship,” she explained. “Not fog that retreated—no fog at all, but it’s way thicker up top, not to mention the lightning.”

The ensign smiled. “Good.”

“That’s good?”

“Not the lightning, but the rest makes things easier.” He raised his wand. “The amplifiers are in place and your efforts seem to have scared off the monsters based on what you said. I can do what I need to do and deactivate the artifact. If all goes well, it should close the portal and return the Constantinople to Earth. I’m only sorry it took so long.” He pointed to the door. “You need to get back above deck so you can portal to Earth.”

She shrugged. “What’s the point? You’ll bring the ship back, right? We’ll travel with you.”

He shook his head. “The only thing I’m confident about is that I can seal the portal. There’s a good chance the ship will come back too, but I can’t be sure of that. And if it does come back, it’ll go through the same magic as it did the first time. I can’t be sure that you won’t be sealed in a bulkhead. I didn’t trust the magic then and I trust it even less now.”

Hana frowned. “What about you? Can’t you set it on automatic or something? You might end up all…you know, inside something.”

“No, I can’t set it on automatic and it doesn’t matter anyway.” His shoulders and head slumped.

“You can’t give up now, Grandpa,” Drysi insisted.

“Grandpa?” Abner uttered a quiet chuckle. “You look older than me.”

“You’re over a hundred.” The witch grinned. “And you’re a military man. You have to keep fighting until you’re dead. “You survived when no one else did. You can’t give up now.”

“That’s just it, I already am.”

She shook her head. “Fighting doesn’t mean only stopping the monsters. It also means surviving.”

The ensign’s chuckle sounded pained. “You don’t understand. I’m already dead.”

Hana gasped. Alison stared at him, her mouth agape in disbelief. She’d run into any number of weird things in her life but somehow, the world constantly managed to surprise her.

Mason pulled his wand out and murmured a spell. “What the hell?”

Hana sniffed the air. “Oh, shit. That’s what it smells like. It kind of reminds me of what those Tapestry assholes smelled like and they borrowed dead bodies for their work.” She winced. “No offense, Abner.”

“None taken. I don’t know what the Tapestry is, but you’re right. I’m currently an abomination and I think, under normal circumstances, the spell wouldn’t have even worked. I’m disgusted with myself, but it was necessary.”

Alison stared at him. “No normal spell can bring someone back to life.
