Barti strode to the door.

When she found Opia's phone in their dormitory, she was struck by a dilemma, whether or not to trust her friends. It was possible she was just paranoid. Either way, she wouldn't take a chance. Not with her life at stake. She might be the poorest kid on Quantum. But her life was as important as the rich ones, nonetheless. And so, she made two decisions to ensure her safety.

The first was to contact Ciandra Delvin, now that she had a way. And so she did—she called Opia's mother and informed her about the murders at Quantum and her daughter's disappearance. Ciandra Delvin was just as furious as Barti expected and promised to reach them as soon as she could. Barti explained how she suspected Amara but left out the fact that, by then, she didn't trust Opia either. One would never know how a mother would react if her daughter was suspected to be a serial killer. Barti decided to let Ciandra Delvin be blissfully unaware of her daughter's sabotage at least for the time being.

However, Ciandra Delvin chastised Barti for confronting Amara. Instead of feeling bad, Barti actually felt good to have an adult take charge. Ciandra Delvin promised to reach Quantum the next morning. Meanwhile, she asked Barti to find a place where she would be safe and away from Amara.

How hard would it be to stay alive for one night? Barti wondered.

When she reached the door to execute her second decision, she found Amara standing in the doorway. Her limbs froze in place. She could hear Amara grinding her teeth.

Amara placed her palm on Barti's chest, pushing her in with brute force. "Where the hell do you think, you're going?"

Barti staggered onto the floor, landing butt-first.

"What…"

"What the hell have you done, B? You've ruined my life!" Amara yelled.

"Amara, please. Listen to me." Barti pleaded still on the floor. Her chest constricted from the force Amara exerted earlier. She thought she had one night to survive. But then, it seemed, the seconds were slipping away from her grasp.

“But why?” Amara's arms flailed. “Did you listen to me when I begged you to? I thought you were my friend. I was away for an hour, and you posted that fucking article on the notice board?”

What the what, now? I posted the article on the notice board? Barti felt maniacal laughter building up inside her chest, despite her furious state. “Oh, you imagined that too? Remember the notice board was removed after you posted Cyra’s head on it?”

Amara rolled her eyes like the joke’s on Barti. “I know!” she started in a calm tone. “You think I’m a total nut head, huh? This one’s on the other board in the admin block. Now don’t tell me you didn’t because I know that it was you.”

Barti realized that she was still on the ground.

She pushed herself up and stormed to the side porch. Grabbing the powdery newspaper, the evidence of her innocence, when she sauntered back to the living room, Amara awaited as if she could look through Barti's heart.
