Chapter Seventeen

The winds swept against Prometheus’ body as David flew like a jet across the sky. Despite his speed, it was over eight thousand miles from Arizona to Dubai. Still, he never got tired of flying. There was nothing like it in the world.

He heard Prometheus’ voice echo inside his head. David?

Welcome to the party, David said.

Where are we going?

Dubai, he said. Another of your old playmates has surfaced.

I’ve never been to Dubai, Prometheus replied.

You came close. Dubai is less than one hundred and thirty miles from the Strait of Hormuz.

You’ve been there before?

David nodded mentally. I was stationed there briefly during the Yemeni War.

I have no memory of that war.

The war happened after you were taken to Project Tartarus. Dubai is the capital of the United Arab Emirates. They were one of our key allies in the region.

Were? Prometheus asked.

David kept forgetting how little Prometheus knew about the current state of the world. Much had changed while he’d slept for ten years. With America’s influence in decline, the U.A.E. decided to focus its attention on domestic pursuits. Dubai is a center of business with little American presence, which makes it a perfect choice for Zhang.

Wait, Prometheus said. I…I remember. I dreamt of you fighting in the war. I saw you fighting in defense of a city, struggling to protect your friends. You were very brave. It almost sounded like he admired him.

David was silent in the face of the reminder that the connection between their memories was a two-way street. Then a troubling thought occurred to him.

I thought you couldn’t remember anything from your sleep, he said. Was this a sign Prometheus was gaining influence, or worse, control?

There are times now when I’m still aware of myself, even when you’re gone, Prometheus replied. David remained quiet. Does that trouble you?

No, he said finally. I’m sorry for what General Masters did to you. No one deserves that.

Thank you. You’re a better man than I thought you were, David. If not for you, I’d still be the military’s prisoner.

You’re still a prisoner. You’re trapped in your own body, David said without thinking, momentarily forgetting Prometheus could hear his thoughts.

Maybe, but at least you want to use me to help others. Masters would use me only to destroy.

The unexpected gratitude caught David off guard.

Luckily, Sunny chimed in before he had to form a response. “You’re almost there. How’s Prometheus? Can you hear me, big guy?”

“He hears you,” David said. It was just like Sunny to greet Prometheus, even knowing he couldn’t talk back.

She’s a kind person, Prometheus said. I’ve seen your memories of her. She takes care to treat my body well, even though I can’t see or hear her. If only the rest of humanity was like her, the world would be a better place.

No disagreement there, David said. I’m lucky to have Elizabeth and Sunny on my team. I couldn’t do any of this without them.

It must be nice to have friends, Prometheus said. I had very few growing up.

No wonder, David thought privately.
