only scrolls of noise
from the machines
of pleasure
bass throb
and idiot laughter
from cars dealing
in an alley
Granular look
of the breadth of sky
with night not all
diminished
chafing
to return
the cries of
mischief from
children who rove
urinating at will
lifting
rocks against large things
exploding
like tiny lightbulbs
going out
coming on
feverish in change
flickering in view
The car pulled up
and held itself in a dome
of unbroken red no one got out
but there were others
behind the driver nobody moved
no one got out
although the car was full
dark faces in profile icons
of patience unmarred
for the moment
or were they
composing
their breath
for the jump
