Dressing Miranda was the biggest challenge. As a lawyer, she was the only one with what someone uninterested in fashion might call a âserious job,â and had to look the most professional. âCynthia is a strong, smart woman, and because sheâs an actress who does her homework, she already had a wardrobe in mind when we met,â Field recalls, âand it was all very cool and tailored. I got it, but I canât help it: I like glamour. I had to give her a little flair or I wouldnât be inspired. Luckily, she had a relative with a jewelry collection that we agreed on for starters. And then we started to dance.â129
Sex and the City keeps on dancing, dating, drinking, and screwing, but itâs not the same. It couldnât be. The women are older in the reboot; based on the overtly aging garb they wear in the first season of And Just Like That . . . , the next season could have them entering assisted living. Covid, economic imbalance, social media, and their impact on dating habits have altered the rhythms of the city. And Field is no longer involved. As she declares, âI did it. I loved it. Iâm done.â130
Iâm not. Watching the original series again is like slipping under a yummy cashmere blanket and finding an equally yummy companion there. The show celebrated a time when living it up, laughing it up, dressing it up, and giving it up in the Land of Enchantment seemed to have no downside. Carrieâs big love was never Mr. Big. It was always New Yorkâthough she admits in the finale voiceover what we all know, even if weâre too quick to brush it aside: the person you need to love most, is yourself. All the more reason to always look fabulous for the one you love.
