“It’s an excellent sherry, don’t you think? Do have some more, John.” The Archbishop leaned across to fill Ripley’s glass for the third time. Ripley, toiling to control his impatience, accepted. “It’s Spanish. Really too much of an indulgence. My worst vice—so I flatter myself to believe. Or perhaps you would prefer something stronger?”

“No. Really. Thank you,” Ripley answered. He had been with McCaffrey in his office for over an hour, groping his way awkwardly through a convoluted conversation that kept returning to the subject of sherry and similar trivia. “Archbishop, I did want to get back to Santa Barbara this evening and begin arrangements for Mother Constancia to leave.” He had reminded McCaffrey of that at least twice since they had sat down to talk.

“Yes, but John, I’m not at all certain we really want her to leave.”

“I’m certain.”

“Then I must say I don’t understand your urgency. It seems wholly premature. You say Mother experienced a terrible nightmare last night. Doesn’t that mean that she’s as much in need of care now as ever?”

“Not the sort of care Devane is offering her.”

“But really, John, are you the person to decide about that? Am I?” McCaffrey’s tone was smooth but challenging. “You realize what Dr. Devane’s reputation is.”

“I do. But I also know Devane is wrong for her. There are things going on at the Clinic that Mother should not be exposed to.” McCaffrey held his sherry to the light and studied its amber radiance. “Yes, this idea about the dreams... I don’t believe I fully grasp that as yet. You claim Devane is somehow manipulating Mother Constancia’s dreams.”

“I don’t know if it’s Devane. It may be people who work with him, people who monitor dreams.”

“Monitor dreams.” McCaffrey mused upon the phrase. “But is that really possible, John? I’m not aware I’ve ever come across such a thing.”

“Nor have I—until this morning.”

“Just this morning. This woman—Mrs. Vale—told you about it. And you believe her.” Tactfully, McCaffrey was giving his words a skeptical coloring.

“Yes.”

“You know, John, as I recall, Mrs. Vale has been under care herself at the Clinic. Has it occurred to you that she may be a bit... well... unstable?”

“As I told you, she offered me a convincing demonstration of her powers.”

“Yes, but I’m not at all clear about this demonstration. Do you think you might go over that once more?”

“Mrs. Vale was able to describe a dream that I had. She was also able to describe Mother’s dream. Both in exact detail. More clearly than we could have recalled them ourselves.”

“Ah, now that’s where I begin to have a problem. She recalled the dreams more clearly than you did. Might there not have been some form of suggestion at work here? She may have talked you into believing things you hadn’t dreamed at all. Do you see what I mean?” Wearily, Ripley rejected the idea. “I’m certain I had the dream. And Mrs. Vale was in it—observing it.”

“Did you discuss this with Dr.
