ELECTION

Today I’d like to think the sky

is the limit. And this yellow kitchen

something more than air between coals

and cold gasses, winds, urgent voices.…

The trees dive overnight into gold.

Again they’ve done it as a gift to me

at the window, to you nosing disgruntled

into traffic. The weather

will take it all back as another

election, another carnival ship

cracks the horizon with flags

and barrels of beer, new friends

who look like old friends, arguments

juxtaposed and clicking into place,

picked bone, old socket, death

by air, death by flame,

this morning’s paper rolled fat

with warnings. I open it, then find

myself counting potatoes at the sink,

parting one tight hide at a time

from one tough heart. I watch leaves

outside cut loose and swirl

away from trampled paths.

I find my hands at the small

of my back, giving comfort

to that place where my body keeps

its bargain, keeps standing,

as huge vans on their winter tires

gather speed past the house.
