Chapter 35

“I’ll get you out in just a second,” Katy reassured the squirming, giggling child in the car seat behind her. With a self-conscious touch-up to her lightly tinted peach lip gloss, she tightened the ponytail at the back of her head. Hannah’s words about her youthful appearance echoed in her head, telling her that no one would take her seriously because she looked too young.

Why should I try to look more mature when I don’t feel old? she thought. She and Amy both worry too much.

Elizabeth kicked the back of the seat in front of her, her sparkly pink and purple sneakers pounding a rhythm. She squealed with typical childish impatience, a Cabbage Patch doll beside her bobbing up and down as she shook the doll by one plump leg.

“Mommy!” she said, her voice rising. “Mommy! I want to be out!”

“Yes, little Lizzy,” Katy said. “Right now just be sweet to Dolly.”

Katy looked forward to seeing Cora every week for a number of reasons, not the least of which was the growing friendship between their young daughters. From the beginning of their sessions, Cora had encouraged the widow to bring Elizabeth with her.

Elizabeth was enthusiastic and loud, typical for a child her age. Having spent her formative years in the Methodist church nursery and preschool, she was accustomed to interacting with other children and enjoyed their company.

Jane, having never had a playmate her own age, was fascinated by anything and everything Elizabeth did, watching with intense admiration. Despite her quieter, less rambunctious behavior, she too delighted in these times.

The therapy playroom was amply supplied with an ever-changing variety of toys, but Katy made certain that Elizabeth arrived with her well-loved Cabbage Patch doll.

Both girls, despite the differences in their personalities, had in common their generous, kind hearts. Under Marjorie’s attentive eyes, they were provided living and stuffed toys alike, with an ample supply of tea party treats and personal attention.

The session today began much like all the others. The two little girls greeted each other as if they hadn’t seen each other in weeks, as though they hadn’t spent every Wednesday morning since the second week in January in the sunroom of Cora’s house under the watchful gaze of Marjorie and Solomon, the cat.

Elizabeth, the younger but more vocal of the two, danced through the hallway, Dolly securely tucked under one delicate arm, her destination clear. Jane, her own two stuffed black kittens in hand, dutifully followed.

Katy stopped apologizing for her three-year-old’s boisterous enthusiasm after the first week.

“Marjorie adores spending time with Elizabeth,” Cora had insisted. “Jane enjoys having a playmate who comes on a regular basis. They all have such fun together.”

Katy agreed, though from time to time she insisted that it was an imposition to bring her daughter along, no matter what Cora said.

She tried to increase Cora’s weekly fee, but the therapist wouldn’t hear of it.

“Why should you pay me for a playdate?” Cora had said. “You’re doing me a favor, you know. And I appreciate having another child in the house.
